Juventus have boosted Milan’s hopes of signing Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco this summer by turning their attentions elsewhere in a hunt for a new midfielder.
As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, the Bianconeri are now much more focused on signing Khephren Thuram from OGC Nice this summer.
This change of heart could be prompted by having sealed the deal for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, meaning they have less need to sign a defensive midfielder who sits at the base of the midfield.
Fofana is one of a handful of midfielders linked with Milan, with the Rossoneri looking to sign an all-rounder who is comfortable screening the back four whilst still offering something in attack.
The Frenchman is currently at Euro 2024 and would cost around €25m, given he only has one year left on his contract.
Whilst Juventus being out of the frame is a boost for Milan, the club still needs to decide between Fofana and other players such as Andre Trindade from Fluminense and Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord.
Fofana is certainly the most proven player out of those three options but he would also command the highest wage which may present a problem for Milan and push them towards other targets.
Juve just got Douglas Luiz they dont need Fofana. They go for Thuram and Calafiori now.
With Juventus getting Douglas Luiz, probably Thuram and Koopmeiners, I wonder if the media will attack them as they did Milan for signing foreigners.
If they sign all 3, aren’t they pushing aside the “great” Italian midfielders they have, like Locatelli, Fagioli , Miretti?
Let’s see if the old man Sacchi will have the same energy for Juventus as he has for Milan.
That Douglas Luiz deal is a piece of extraordinary business by Juventus’ team, effectively they make a profit on the books by selling 40-50m to Villa and they get one of the best defensive midfielders in the world for relatively little outlay – obviously on very large wages. Guessing about 15m per season for the overall deal. And some of that will no doubt be offset by funnelling some of the money through his partner moving to their women’s team.
