CM: Kjaer sets aim of retiring at Milan – what filters on his future

By Oliver Fisher -

Simon Kjaer has made it clear that he wishes to remain at AC Milan beyond next summer and sign a contract extension, according to a report.

Calciomercato.com recall that Kjaer crossed the milestone of 100 appearances with the Milan shirt during the game against Hellas Verona on Saturday, starting in the heart of the three-man defence and helping keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

He hopes there can be many more appearances to come, too. The Danish defender wants to end his career with the Rossoneri by renewing his contract which expires in July 2024.

However, given the doubts that have emerged since the start of last season about his physical condition and ability to contribute consistently at the highest level, it seems a decision has not yet come from the management.

The pitch will have the final say, given that by the end of the season Kjaer will be 35 and will likely remain down the pecking order.

  1. He should find a team with 3 CB formation, as center of the CB’s so he can be starter again. But Milan will need him this season especially when it need to defend using 3 CB or 5 defenders

  2. I hope he stays and personally i would have no issues with him renewing his contract for a further year. He might not be fast but defesivley speaking he is our best defender in my view BUT obviously he is getting older but as long he can accept his reduced role i see no issue in him renewing his contract as everyone in the back line can still learn a thing or two from him.

      1. At this point of his career i think he would accept that and when his career ends im pretty sure he will stay living in italy as he has expressed that wish before in danish interviews so he propably will accept a renewal even though he is now lower down the pecking order than previously,

    1. lol no disrespect but he is not even playable in our current system that depend high defense line playing him mean easy counterattack for opponent like inter game
Simon Kjaer is not even our top 3 defenders , i played all my life as defender i think i know thing or two about it lol

      1. Well he is very experienced and has great leadership skills, positional skills and reading of the game i dont see anyone in the backline as good as him in those areas of his game but i do understand your assesment of the high pressing though. When that is said he has never been dependant on speed but his positional skills,
Whether you have played as a defender or not on assumingly amateure level is not really a valid argument in my view and it can be argued that kjær is the captain and most capped danish international player ever so guess that kinda trumps that argument.
Anyways i respect your view but besides of the high pressing part i can still see kjær offering something to the team even if he doesnt play as much as previously.

        1. i agree that he still can offer something to the team like leadership and helping our defenders with some advice about how to reed attacking situation and how to defend them , other then that he is not really playable because of Theo Hernandez attacking style he leave a lot of spaces behind that need faster defenders to cover spaces and to stay 1 vs 1 with fast winger and player that’s why Tomori roles he play in our system make him the most important in my eyes ,
i think we need left footed defender in our team i don’t think milan owner will keep player to just being a mentor i respect Your opinion Your kjær is ahead of everyone on positioning timing reading situation unfortunately for him
modern football will have no space for slower defender who can’t keep up with faster players like in today you won’t see slow defenders play in teams that want to win trophy i promise you that defender will retire faster then other positions because one mistake and your out
anyway i always gonna remember kjær performance against spurs ,

          1. We will play different matches where he can still be of value to our matches but as you i also respect your opinions as well even if we doesnt fully agree on all matters i do aknowledge you have a point in regard of high pressure style nevertheless as he can be caught out of position if we play against a very fast team but still i overall believe in his positional skills to sort out the great majority of issues,

      2. I see your point, but if he is not mind how many minutes he plays, we can keep him till 2025. It would be good to have a figure like him in the team, and he can play against relegation teams. His salary is not that high, and we have a young squad, so keeping an influential figure like him won’t hurt us.

  3. To the people who have the endless energy to keep saying Kjaer is old and slow. Hasn’t he been slow all his life? Yes. Yes, he has. That hasn’t changed. He’ll do fine as the 3rd or 4th option though.

Was Puyol quick? Nope. Nesta? Nope. Chiellini? Nope. Is Thiago Silva quick? Nope. Somehow he still hacks it in the EPL. Pace isn’t everything.

    1. Was Puyol quick? yes. Nesta? hell yes . Chiellini? sure. Is Thiago Silva quick?was very quick . lol you know nothing about those defender you mention

    2. I believe T.Silva and Chiellini are quick CBs or at least quicker than Kjaer lol. Well that’s not my point, I quite like Kjaer, his cool head and gentleman leadership. He may not be best for high defense but he’s other qualities the other defenders may be a bit short at like composure positioning timing. Besides not all our games or minutes will be prepared for high defensive line. Being like 4th choice CB there’ll be games or moments he’d be ideal for. Tho I’m fine with him more for his character.

    3. Bro I don’t think you’ve seen these guys play. You can’t say these guys were never quick. Puyol originally played at RB and I distinctly remember his pace on the flank. Now if you are talking about when they got older sure. But to say they’ve never been quick? Come on bro. Nesta was one of the fastest centee backs in the game when he came to Milan. I distinctly remember Nesta outpacing Roy Makaay in a UCL game back in the 00s and Tommy Smith the commentator talking about Nesta’s pace. Thiago Silva had serious pace for a CB and was one of the fastest in his prime. Eventually as they grew older and lost their pace, they adjusted their game to suit and were more positional.
Kjaer has distinctly lost some pace from a year ago. He looks laboured on the field. Come on buddy

I’m slowly starting to realize alot of you haven’t seen alot of football especially from many years back but preach that you do. Just like when Dejan said he didn’t remember us playing this many games in a short space of time, when in fact we always did when we used to be in the UCL regularly. 7 games in 20 days is about the norm at this time of the year.

      1. “I’m slowly starting to realize alot of you haven’t seen alot of football especially from many years back but preach that you do.”

LOL. Think what you want. 😀
