CM: Leao ends drought and enjoys fans’ love – he is needed for Milan’s trophy pursuit

By Oliver Fisher -

After leaving the field to some boos after his performance against Sassuolo, Rafael Leao came off the bench and put the gloss on AC Milan’s 4-1 win over Cagliari last night.

Calciomercato.com writes how the winger’s goal in the closing stages was worth little in the outcome of the match but a lot on a personal level. The Portuguese talent broke a fast that had lasted since November 7, when he scored and was arguably Man of the Match against PSG in the Champions League.

Christian Pulisic has taken on the responsibility of leading the attack at times when Leao has been not at his best or injured, and it is easy to forget that that for a good month he was stuck on the sidelines meaning it is not always so easy to get back to the best condition in a short time.

The Rossoneri wants to lift at least one trophy this season, whether it is the Coppa Italia or the Europa League, and to achieve this they will need to be able to count on the best version of Leao, the player who left the field lsat night with his usual contagious smile.

He has already forgotten the boos that came in the match against Sassuolo from a minority of fans. Yesterday the entire stadium rallied behind him and chanted for him even before he entered the pitch, which make the love towards him obvious.

Rafa himself, after the match that sealed Milan’s passage to the quarter-finals of the cup, posted a message on X addressed to the fans: ” Thank you Curva Sud, you’re real, let’s continue together… 2024 will be a good year for us.”
