CM: Lecce hatch Colombo plan after his decisive goal – the position of Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Lorenzo Colombo scored his fifth Serie A goal of the season and it was the one that ended up securing Lecce’s place in the top flight, with that being the biggest contribution of his loan spell from AC Milan.

Calciomercato.com recall how after the match against Udinese, the Lecce head coach Marco Baroni was prophetic: “Colombo is a quality boy, we need him.” A week later, he scored a 101st-minute penalty to earn victory against Monza and ensure they stay in the league.

Colombo has scored big goals this season, such as the one that decided the victory against Lazio and the goals to earn draws against Napoli and Udinese away from home.

Message sent to Milan, who have observed the 21-year-old’s growth this season from afar. The Rossoneri still have control over the player as Lecce signed him on loan with an option to buy set at €2.5m, while there is a €3m buy-back included.

The inclusion of that clause was a sign that Milan really believe in the striker, and there is a big summer of change coming with Divock Origi and Ante Rebic set to leave plus Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s potential retirement.

Milan will invest in a young striker who will alternate with Olivier Giroud, but it is not excluded that Colombo could also be included in the plans. Lecce will use their option while awaiting a counter-move from Milan.

  1. If he is willing to take role as 3rd striker then take it him back but if he dont want better let him on lecce

    1. why would he accept the option of being a 3rd striker at milan when he could be a starter/impact sub at lecce? If lecce were to buy him, I would use the buy-back clause and buy him back and send him on loan for 1-2 years, making sure he has adequate game time. Then, would bring him back as 1st/2nd option for Milan

  2. Should buy him back then loan for 1 more year. He found his feet this season, now let him develop next year and bring him back after that.

    1. I tend to agree.

I love the idea of homegrown players as much as the next fan but it cannot be at the expense of a certain level of quality.

I don’t see ‘it’ in Colombo. That absolute belter he scored at the start of the season aside, he looks to me to be more of an old-fashioned poacher. At that, his record both last season in the Serie B and this season in the Serie A is very average, it’s 12 goals in 2 full seasons.

Thrown in some blistering pace and he would be a player I’d be concerned about losing.

      All the best to him.

  3. Colombo is not ready yet and that’s the fact.

Stats don’t lie and his stats are very poor for a striker.

  4. He’s too slow. He’s another Petagna. I don’t know how players like this get into the academy. A lack of pace for a striker is death unless they’re big and strong and have great movement. El Hilali is much better.
