CM: Chain effect risk and the €70m temptation – Milan grappling with Maignan’s renewal

AC Milan are currently locked in negotiations with the entourage of Mike Maignan over a renewal and it will not be an easy agreement to reach, a report claims.

According to what is being reported by Calciomercato.com, Maignan intends to secure a pay rise with his next contract that reflects his status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. As a result, his request to Milan exceeds the offer of €4.5m plus bonuses from the club.

Maignan currently gets €2.8m net per season, the figure agreed at the time of his arrival from Lille in 2021. The margins to continue negotiating are there as well as the will of all those present in the negotiation, but the road remains ‘quite uphill’.

The main issue is that Milan are not willing to further raise their €4.5m offer at the moment. The Rossoneri have rather strict parameters when it comes to salaries and do not want to run the risk of a chain effect whereby others come in and ask for a large rise.

In addition to that, this has been a difficult season for Maignan with more goals let in than usual (far from all his fault) and further injury problems. Nonetheless, the Frenchman remains a goalkeeper who makes the difference.

That is why Bayern Munich are interested, even if no official approaches have arrived. For Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani it would be less painful and less complicated to sell Maignan than it would Theo Hernández or Rafael Leão.

They would listen to offers in the region of €70m for Maignan, but at the moment the priority remains to try and get a contract extension done.

  1. I think hes the best option for Neuer replacement. We know that 70m for bayern its easy to take in. They the one of the most healthy football club in europe. Bayern will sell alphonso davies to Madrid for double swoop Maignan + Theo.

  2. We’re never selling Mike above 50M. He is 2 injury prone and contract is till 26. Longer would give Milan more negotiating room.. it is what it is.

Oh yeah, age. He will be 29 this summer, still a ways to go for a keeper but not exactly young, with his prime in front of him

    1. Slight caveat to that is if he has an amazing Euro tournament over the summer. That might trigger a wealthy club to make a silly offer.
Otherwise I agree with your assessment.

  3. If you get an offer for anything North of €60M you’d better take it! He is a shell of his former self since his injuries and rather invest into better CB and utilize Sportiello and buy Trubin or Chevalier (each about €30M). Use the balance of the money to bring in Buongiorno and now you have Gabbia, Tomori, Thiaw, and Buongiorno. Kalulu provides cover for Calabria and in a bind you can move him back to CB.

Don’t need a strong GK if you have the best back line that never gives up any shots……just ask Dida.

  4. I would sell. His injury issues will only get worse with time. Keep Theo at all costs. He’s one in a million.

  5. I would sell him too. Keep Rafa and Theo, sell Mike, that’s what the board should do. And so let’s reinforce the squad for the next season.

  6. Sportiello is a decent enough replacement, reminds me a bit of Abbiati with his heroics, he’s a solid GK, decent enough for a stopgap. The only downside is his distribution. It’s not like we’ve got Tatarasanu between the sticks or Zeljko Kalac.

  7. Considering the renewal issue, his tendencies to get injured every season, the fact that he is a goalkeeper and Sportiello, selling him for anything north of 50M would definetly be a good deal.
We’re likely going to get around 40-50M from Saelemakers+CDK+Maldini, if we add in 50M or more from Maignan, that’s already 90-100M without even considering the summer budget and other players we’re gonna put to sale to purchase 3 quality players (at most 4). And a new goalkeeper isn’t going to cost that much anyways.

  8. Certainly a character within the squad with his pre-match tunnel chant of “let’s go, Milan, let’s go”. Brilliant!!!
If the right price comes in then sell him on, please.

  9. We’ll never get 70 million for him. Would be rediculous to pay that for him. At least after this season.

  10. Mike is a good keeper, maybe even the best in some aspects like ball distributions and reflexes. But if Bayern wants him i would rather sell him then Theo. GK is not that hard to replace. Also try to get Zirkzee in the deal too. Give them a discount on Mike and let them give us Zirkze in return.

    1. I agree in regard of Maignan versus Theo, i’ll be absolutely livid if we end up selling Theo. Mike is indeed a good keeper even though he has also had some rather shaky matches this seasonbut if i was in the shoes of the management i wouldnt pay him 8 mil a year if those rumors are to be believed on the other hand I wouldnt have any issues paying theo that if that were to be his demands as I consider him the most irreplaceable player of the entire squad.

      1. and that’s why i like you my guy even if i don’t agree with you all the time , you understand football and you true milan fan

  11. Zirkzee has a 40m clase with Bayern.

Sell Mike at Zirkzee + 20m. Buy Carnesechi from Atalanta for De Ketalare. D net $8m I think 28m was the option)

Striker solved, keeper solved. We are $28m net positive. Get a bad ass DM and what the new manager needs.

    Dreaming is fun.

    1. CDK 23mil + bonuses so initially 5 less than the 28 mil but not a bad idea. Bayern might only wanna pay us ten + Zirkzee and Atalanta might want more for Carnesechi but this isn’t too far fetched from what i can judge,

If the club actually wants to take a further leap then throw in 50-70 mil on top of that and keep the other starters and we would be in a really great position for next season.

  12. These players want what another club, with more money than sense, is desperate or dumb enough to play not the sum that reflects playing quality.

Sure, that’s the market but for 2 seasons now Maignan has been an above average (as opposed to elite) and relatively injury prone keeper.

If we don’t have the money, he’s asking to be transferred, isn’t he?

    Sell.

While I really like Carnesecchi I’d just as soon rely on Sportiello and look at one of the keepers from a side that gets relegated for a few years.

Turati is good. Scouffet is solid. Silvestri has lost his spot (though Udinese should be safe). Cragno is on loan at Sassuolo from Monza. He was the keeper for Cagliari for their previous campaign in the Serie A. Caprile at Empoli is really good but he’s on loan from Napoli and will be their #1 next season. Consigli is probably still too good be stuck on the bench but he could be the experienced head for the group (like Mirante).

There are 2 keepers in the youth system who, by all reports, are special talents: Raveyre, the current Primavera #1 who will be 19 for the start of next season; and Longoni who turned 16 in January but who already has 4 caps for Italy U17. My understanding is that these guy are well ahead of Nava for talent, for example. It’s not just a case of talking up the next kid in the system, you have to reach past Bartoccioni and Torriani (who have kept for the U19s in the past 2 seasons) and Colzani (the current U18 keeper) to get to Longoni who may well be the Primavera keeper next season.

Develop from within in. To try shape the team around players who grew up with the club. They’re much more of a chance of staying.

  13. After the injury issues they are currently experiencing with Neuer they won’t be clever replacing him with a player of similar injury history. Hard for such an organized club to completely ignore what Milan considered “a difficult season for Maignan with more goals let in than usual and always injured”. I think there’s more chance of pushing him to an EPL side for that sum. Don’t worry in England they don’t really scout players so may not be aware of his history with injuries. Mike have 3 good games in the Euros hopefully ,EPL club throw good money at Milan.

  14. Just sell Maignan and get Bulka. He out played Gigio in ligue 1 in total saves and clean sheets this season and will be relatively cheap at 25m.
