CM: Milan vs. Inter is Maignan vs. Onana – two of the best with potentially differing destinies

By Oliver Fisher -

The Champions League semi-final clash between AC Milan and Inter will see two of the very best goalkeepers battle against each other.

Calciomercato.com speaks about the long-distance duel between the Rossoneri’s Mike Maignan and the Nerazzurri’s André Onana, two of the best shot-stoppers not only in Serie A but in the whole world.

The 2022-23 season did not start well for both. Maignan had the calf injury which kept him out for almost four months, Onana meanwhile had to battle with Samir Handanovic for a starting spot, but both have put their difficulties behind them.

Onana has so far been the goalkeeper with the most saves in the Champions League (42) even ahead of Courtois, producing decisive stops against Barcelona in the group stage and against Porto in the round of 16.

Maignan has also made some decisive interventions though, such as in the Champions League against Tottenham (on Kane in the 96th minute) and then against Napoli (on Di Lorenzo as well as the penalty from Kvaratskhelia).

While they have their similarities, the future is a point of difference because Maignan is considered non-transferable except in the face of crazy offers while Inter would sell the Cameroonian if a bid came in that would ease the need to raise funds, with Chelsea interested.
