CM: Reinvigorated Milan midfielder’s future remains undecided – the details

By Ben Dixon -

Ahead of the summer, AC Milan are assessing their squad, attempting to decide who will be able to feature in the new manager’s plans and who could be sold to raise funds to better the Rossoneri’s squad.

With Stefano Pioli’s future all but officially confirmed, Milan are preparing to move into a new era under the management of a new candidate. Whilst Pioli’s successor has not been decided, work is already commencing, preparing the squad for the next head coach.

One of the decisions yet to be made is about the future of Yacine Adli, who has become an indispensable player for the Diavolo in recent months. The French midfielder has waited for his chance in recent years, and upon being offered one, he has taken it with both hands, helping the Rossoneri in multiple difficult situations.

Calciomercato.com have reported that Milan are currently considering his situation, with two options on the table. Firstly, the club may choose to offer him a new contract. Alternatively, though, if an offer comes in for the midfielder, it would be discussed internally, with his role not cemented within the side.

Regardless of the decision, Adli deserves his flowers for his performances in recent months, and he is an important squad player for the Rossoneri, who should be valued highly.

  1. He isn‘t really starter quality but good to have on the bench.
Bennacer is dropping down into that category as well though.

    1. Agree so far… though a lot will depend on pre-season friendlies of next year to decide who will be the starters.

I’ve heard rumors that Bennacer has 40+ million offers from Arab clubs. For a good offer, I’d sell Bennacer first, with Adli, Musah and Pobega a lot less likely to be sold. RLC and Reijnders seem to be the only two assured to stay unless really good offers (nothing below 40 mill) come for them.

      1. Yes, he is. His biggest qualities are long passes and he isn’t agile or quick enough to play higher up the field, so yeah.

        1. At the moment he’s like if Pirlo was put in the shoes of Gattuso. Pair Adli with a proper DM and let him focus on creating the play instead of chasing the opponents and I promise you Adli will shine.

If Adli can play this well out of position, imagine him getting to use his strengths instead.

  2. The player hasn’t been helped by Pioli leaving him to rot. He was a Maldini purchase for development.
I hope he stays and improves under a new forward thinking coach.

  3. I have a personal problem with Maldini and because Adli was a purchase by Maldini, I now have a personal problem with Adli. I do not care how well he can become and how big his potential is. Sell asap. Nothing is wrong with him, everything is wrong with Maldini.

  4. I would sell Adli before Bennacer. We know how well Benny can play but we haven’t really seen anything stellar out of Adli yet.

    1. At least he can take a corner.
And since most of our midfielders are mid anyways, I’d rather keep the one willing to fight for the badge.

      1. I think Adli gave more successful (goal-leading) corners in one match this season than Bennacer has done during his whole (Milan)-career! 😀

Bennacer looked like an washed up amateur this year. I wouldn’t put my money on him getting back to his best form again.

    2. I would like to disagree.

Bennecar had the cover of Tonali and Kessie when he dribbled himself or passed into bad situations. He’s notorious for it.

Adli does it as well with his passes but her doesn’t very often with his dribbles in our third.

Bennecar’s dribbling in our defensive third ambsolutely infuriates me.

I would put them on par with each other with Adli having a bigger upside.

If you don’t believe me, watch where Benny gives the ball away. You’ll be suprised.

  5. Adli is the only player that showed any kind of fight against Inter. I respect him for that. The other players showed no intensity, not until the game was almost over.

  6. Am sorry to say this, but only a braid dead individual would sell a developing player, who so far has shown grit for the badge and willingness even in his character. A player whose development has been stunted by our resident coach for almost an entire season and playing a role is he not suited to. And then his first actual game season talks are been said to cut him off, despite his contributions…..

Once again if it offends anyone, I am truly sorry. But I am apologetic and also un-apologetic.

  8. I was never fully convinced of Adli’s qualities. I think he is good, not great; also a bit irregular; has had some very bad games, and also some good ones. Overall, decent. Can help as a sub. Maybe it’s because of Pioli not developing him properly and/or not playing him under his most ideal role. I don’t know. Or else, maybe he has a ceiling and won’t ever be great, even if a new coach develops him more and utilizes him better.

Bennacer on the other hand, we know he can play at a very high level. He hasn’t, ever since his injury. I hope he will fully recover and resume his previous high quality. I’d give him more time before rushing into selling him.

I think both players should remain, but if I had to pick between just the two of them for one to be sold, I’d rather sell the guy who is potentially good (if he develops more) but unproven (Adli), than the guy who is proven (Ben) although he hasn’t been the same since the injury.

Neither decision is straightforward. What if Adli does develop nicely? And what if Ben never recovers his previous form?

But as of now, I’d keep Ben over Adli.
