CM: Milan’s plan for the attack unchanged despite striker struggles – the situation

By Oliver Fisher -

With Alvaro Morata out injured there has not been very promising signs from either of his deputies so far, but the AC Milan management remain firm on their strategy.

According to Calciomercato.com, Gerry Cardinale met with the Milan management yesterday in addition to the head coach Paulo Fonseca to take stock after what has been a difficult start to the season.

The defence continued its leaky nature from last season but responses will also be needed from the attack, despite the fact that Alvaro Morata and Noah Okafor have each scored this season, in addition to Christian Pulisic.

The Spaniard – the only one capable of offering guarantees – will be out due to injury against Lazio on Saturday, while the Swiss has shown that he is much more useful when he comes off the bench and attacks the spaces that open up.

A similar argument can be made for Luka Jovic, who took the No.9 shirt but struggles from the start. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the main proponent of his contract renewal, after a season in which the Serbian showed he can come on and make a big difference with another player at his side.

As far as the last four days of the transfer market are concerned, Milan do not seem to have any intention of moving for another striker nor is there any chance of Jovic leaving despite the rumours.

Agent Fali Ramadani has never courted his client to other clubs because Ibrahimovic confirmed his desire to keep things as they are unless there are now unlikely exits. Niclas Fullkrug and Tammy Abraham – two of the strikers linked – are both expected to play at West Ham.

  1. If you don’t have a striker , play without a striker. 4-1-4-1 and let leao sleep alone in attack and consider you dont have a striker. LM Saele , RM Pulisic ,DM Fofana , Rejnders and Benacer CM. Even tough i would rather use Adli instead of Benacer but it looks he has gone.

  2. This is why David was needed.

Okafor is good as a sub. Not as a starter. And that’s ok. Tomasson was a super sub for the Ancelotti Milan team.

They need a top notch striker and David fits the bill of being young, creative, fast, and also has experience in Fonsecas team.

    1. If David is a top notch striker (he isn’t) he wouldn’t want to be a sub to morata anyway.
We definitely dodged a bullet by not going after him. Flop is his middle name.

    2. That “good as sub bad as starter” is just a bullsh*t, its more about tired opponents who cant keep concentrated as good as at the start of a match ,quality of striker has nothing with that, its easier for every striker when they come from bench, the only question is their mentality, if they agree to be bench warmer or they wanna to take responaability and start

  3. My impression is that both Jovic and Okafor have demonstrated to be effective strikers particularly when they’re playing in tandem with/as complement to another forward. Why not adapt the tactics to the resources that are available, rather than the other way around, and play Okafor and Jovic together from the start? Maybe dropping the CAM and playing something like a 4-2-2-2 could work.

    1. Adding to that, Saelemakers and Pulisic could very well fit the second line behind the strikers to provide balance and width (sort of as wingers but a bit deeper). Meanwhile, Leao (especially given his recent lacklustre performances as a starter) and Chukwueze can be reserved to leverage their speed later in the game.

  4. Should’ve kept Colombo, no need for transfer fee, good low risk option as 3rd striker, good for squad lists, bleeds red and black and surely no worse than Jovic who appears totally incapable as a starter.

    1. Dont speak about things that already gone. We must look forward with what we have now, or you wanna said that we should’ve kept Tonali, Kessie, Hakan, Dollaruma and so on

    1. Oh goals matter? OK!
I give you one Ben Yedder. Free agent.
45 goals in the last 2 seasons, 9 assists
But sure lets cash out on David. flopsy

  5. Not signing a reliable back up striker, not having a proper Theo back up are proper marks against this management group. As will be the decision to sign Fonseca should this not play out the way we want it to. But day 2 is too soon to call this thing a sinking ship …
