CM: Thiaw and Vranckx candidates for Milan’s UCL squad – the players at risk

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli will have the opportunity to name a new AC Milan squad in the Champions League for the knockout phase. In fact, the manager has been pondering a few chances to the group-stage squad.

23 players were included in the squad for the group stage and the selection was pretty much the expected one. Because of UEFA rules, some picks are inevitably and those mostly concern Italian players, who are usually homegrown.

Antonio Mirante is a good example of this, as Ciprian Tatarusanu was left out because he isn’t an association (within Italy) or club-raised player. If Pioli had named the Romanian instead, then Milan would have lost one slot in the squad (read here for more details).

According to Calciomercato.com, Pioli is seriously thinking about adding Malick Thiaw and Aster Vranckx to the UCL squad. Adding both probably isn’t feasible, but one of them could get the big change.

The players at risk, by the looks of it, are Rade Krunic and Junior Messias. All the Italians will remain because of the aforementioned rules, so there really aren’t many players to replace. With Davide Calabria back, maybe Sergino Dest could miss out.
