Sport: Codina to return to Barcelona after loan spell with AC Milan Women

By Steph Insixiengmay -

Laia Codina will leave AC Milan and return back home to Barcelona at the end of this season, according to a report.

The news has been confirmed by the Catalonian newspaper Sport who report that Barça feel that Codina has grown during her loan spell to Milan and largely views the move as being a positive one.

The Catalan defender will not only head back home to her parent club but also sign a contract extension with them, as her current contract with the club will expire in June of 2022. Codina has played 18 matches for Milan and was once named to the FIGC’s Top XI of the Week.

Laia will head back home to help shore up a Barcelona backline that has been wracked with a constant injury crisis. There is also speculation that she might replace current Barça defender, Andrea Pereira, as the defender’s future for the club is up in the air. Pereira’s contract also expires this year, and it is not known whether they’ll sign a renewal with the club.

In the meanwhile, Serie A Femminile is currently on hiatus for the international break. Once it resumes, then Milan will take on A.S.D.C. Pomigliano on April 24th.

Codina has not been convened by Spain for any of their Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Nonetheless, the defender should play an important role in both Barcelona and her country’s future.
