Conceicao’s first words as AC Milan boss: “We need to be worthy of this great club”

Sergio Conceicao has given his first interview as the new head coach of AC Milan, revealing a sense of pride but also immense responsibility.

It has been a rollercoaster 24 hours at Milan, who went into the 1-1 draw against Roma last night with Paulo Fonseca in charge, but will go into 2025 with a new manager.

The Portuguese was sacked and replaced very quickly by his compatriot, who flew into Italy this morning and took his first training session at Milanello this afternoon.

There is not much time to work for Conceicao after meeting the squad, given that they fly out to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa Italiana tomorrow. The semi-final is against Juventus on January 3.

The new boss was interviewed by Milan TV just after he led his first session along with his staff, and his words have been transcribed below.

“I’m proud to take on this adventure. The emotions are temporary because we need to work. We need a warm heart and a cool head to do our best and win matches. That’s what we want,” he said.

“We represent a great club, on a global level, and we need to be worthy of this great club. We don’t have much time, but that’s absolutely not an excuse.

“With the time at my disposal, I have to do my best so the players understand what they need to do, first as individuals and then as a team, to be the best we can in every single game.

“There is no other road, there is a lot of work to be done with them. We’ll need a strong mentality, and with strong organisation and the players’ quality, we’ll do good things this year. Words are just words, I need to prove myself with results.

“For that, we’ll need a great effort from everyone, not just the players but all the staff who make up the Milanello facility. We’re here to work, what I need to tell the fans is that we’ll work a lot and become a winning side, become a team worthy of this great club.”

  1. I love this speech…. Sounds like he knows the task ahead of him… He have my full support and I also wish him the best as I have done and wished for Fonseca.

Hopefully we can also use his influence to sign young prospects from Portugal as well. And I also wish other players that ain’t performing as expected this season will pickup under his management

  2. It is easier said than done. Please, proof to us what you are capable of doing and transform the team to European standard unlike what we use to be. Best of luck.

  3. I don’t expect fireworks but can’t say I’m not excited to see what this change will bring among the players. He seem to have the grit and discipline that we’re missing and can hopefully transmit that to the lads.

  4. Conceição is a fighter and he never gives up. He reminds me of Gattuso the player and coach but better tactically. He is a mix of Conte and Ancelotti in his tactical flexibility.

We won’t know until he settles in at Milan but I strongly believe Conceição should have been our first option instead of Lopetegui and Fonseca.

I do hope that Ibra, Furlani and Moncada get sacked next summer over this mess that could have been avoided.

Rumors have it that we are trying to sign Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. Maybe a change of league will revive him to his old Benfica form.

  5. Mister, gou had fans support in summer and you ha e it now. As you said gourself, we expect results, but I have to say that you know a good day in the morning and i like your attitude, humbelness and thinking.

Good luck to all of us, lets make 2025 count!!!

  6. Now its management(cardinale) vs fan as he already wanted conceiceo to replace pioli but fan want other thus ibrahimovic select fonseca. He will backup conceiceo & hope they will buy quality player

  7. No coach can be worse than fonseca .good riddance ,..all those that saw fonseca as an upgrade to pioli shud be given the sack …I can’t wait for the first match of the new coach and see how he works on the players mentalities ,milan have better players than most Italian clubs sitting above them ,they need a coach to make them beleive in their talents and togetherness ,not a coach fighting for superiority

  8. He’s really credible, especially with harnessing talents. I just hope it isn’t too late to salvage this season. Unfortunately it probably is.

  9. I dont know sergio are stupid or brave because accepting that clause for his contract with ACM ( 6 month sacked and get nothing). His time only 6 month for finish in CL spot

    1. it’s a risk for him, but he has a lot to gain if it works. if not, not big damage either, cos he’s coming into a difficult situation in the middle of the season.

  10. Forget Sarri this is the kind of profile coach ac Milan need to rescue them for this seasons, a lot of bad coaches will reject the offer for six months to coach the team but he is taking a gamble here & I know he wants to bring ac Milan back to winning ways, the management needs to provide the players he wants this January.
