AC Milan have conceded too many goals at the start of this season, as became very evident in the 1-2 loss against Napoli. And there are many factors behind this decline, as a report highlights.
Despite controlling large parts of the game, especially after the equaliser, Milan ended up losing the game 1-2. The two goals conceded stemmed from two defensive mistakes: first Dest’s tackle on Kvaratskhelia and then Tomori’s poor marking of Simeone.
As Corriere Della Sera highlights (via MilanNews), Milan have already conceded eight goals in seven games. Last season, they conceded just 31 goals and it’s becoming clear that the figure could be higher this campaign.
Tomori has performed below his standard thus far, as the newspaper continues, and Kjaer has only just regained good fitness. Kalulu has perhaps been the better of the three, but his inexperience has also shone through at times.
Milan are expected to work a lot on the defence during the international break, using video analysis, and hopefully this will help. But above all, the players need to raise their individual performance.
Tomori doesnt make a lot of mistakes with Calabria in play. Its really simple, Dest plays like Hernandez (higher and more attacking) that means we have only 2 real defenders.
And one important thing for conceding more goals is departure of Kessie. Bennacer and Tonali are better in many aspects, but they dont mark players like presidente did.
If you ask me Dest and Hernandez should not play together against top 10 teams. (I was blaming Pioli for that mistake, but i guess Calabria was injured, and without Florenzi there was really no other choice)
We were better than Napoli and that says a lot. Forza Milan
Whilst it is true that the two goals against Napoli came from two defensive blunders, the problem is that the team depends on one striker; Giroud. Origi, Ibra and Rebic are all out owing to injuries! Although Tomori is a solid player he is very static and as a central defender, he still has to come to terms with the Italian style of football!
There’s nothing wrong per se with the defence. We’re still doing better than last year at 1.14 per game at this stage vs 1.22 last year🤷♂️
You can’t stop all goals and can only really argue against preventable goals. Great strikes are not part of that and Someone’s goal is just extraordinary while Dest is unfortunate but that is as a result of exceptional skill by Kvardonna. Maignan should have also done better on the pen too but it is what it is. If we won the game, which we should have, it would have been Napoli on 8 goals shipped and us at 6 not the other way around. So, small margins
