CorSera: Giroud and his usual goalkeeping exercise after training – the background

By Isak Möller -

Olivier Giroud’s heroics in goal against Genoa didn’t just come out of nowhere. In fact, the Frenchman often finds himself between the sticks at Milanello, which most likely helped him on Saturday evening.

Giroud’s save in the dying minutes against Genoa has already become historic, and the goalkeeper shirts with his printing have already sold out. In short, Milan fans are over the moon with his actions and even other supporters are praising the veteran.

As told by today’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), his abilities in goal didn’t just come out of nowhere. Giroud himself confirmed that he liked to play in goal as a kid but there is also another important background. At the end of most training sessions at Milanello, he puts on the gloves.

The veteran does so as a team-building exercise, raising motivation by letting his teammates take free-kicks on him. As the newspaper adds, he also does it to acquire information as a striker, wanting to know everything about the goalkeepers. No doubt, it helped him against Genoa.

  1. That’s clever way to beat goal keepers. Train as a goal keeper and understand dynamics of their movement to beat them. Super Smart

  2. As a defender I played as striker to learn their habits. It’s quite helpful especially if you’re paying attention to the movements you’re making. Many great defenders first started as strikers too (dont worry I’m not great 😂😂😂😂)
