AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli hinted at the possibility of trying out some new things tactically, and a formation change could be a possibility.
This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) recalls what Pioli said during his first preseason press conference yesterday in which he hinted at the need to keep an unpredictability from a tactical point of view.
“This is almost my fifth season. I feel like an architect of a thing with a solid structure, but where some areas of the house should be arranged to have something better,” he said.
“There could also be tactical innovations to have greater advantages. A lot will also depend on the characteristics who will arrive. With players of quality and intelligence, new things can be done.”
As per the paper, this certainly suggests the possibility of moving from a 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. It is no coincidence that in yesterday’s first practice match of the season the team were deployed in a 4-3-3 system, too.
Given that Brahim Diaz has departed after his loan ended and Daichi Kamada seemed close to signing but then things went cold, while there is a focus on the right wing role in the mercato, there are further signs that a three-man midfield could be the way forward.
The business done between now and the end of August should present key indicators as to what Pioli has in mind, and he has often lined up with an advanced midfielder who offers defensive guarantees, like when Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer played further forward.
Makes sense. We just need to sell Pulisic, CDK and Adli and then it will fit the team.

Pulisic is a LW. Given that it’s no available at milan, he’ll play as AM or RW, his other positions. He plays as AM at USA and has done so at club level as well.
Also, considering what Pioli said about the RW he wants, he clearly doesn’t intend to play Pulisic there and he’ll probably play him as AM.
No reason to call people names, though.
Please just use wisely every single munition u have mr. Pioli, from our primavera player to the new signings and from the player that u bench them last season, no matter what tactics u have on your mind it will uselless if you only fielded 14-15 player every match….

Trying 433 we need Theo and Leao back to see if it works. They need space for their style of play and 4231 gives them enough freedom to create and move in spaces. With 433 they are a bit limited in their play or if one of mezzala players act as no.10 when attacking. That could be Bennacer/Reijnders role.
4-3-3 with Leao at CF and Pulisic as LW
It will work wonders against top sides in Italy and Europe.
Will be problematic when facing low blocks and parked buses, but there the 4-2-3-1 with Pulisic AM and Giroud CF can do the trick
Many will complain, but think about it. It is the best utilization of the squad given the lack of modern top notch CF.
One of the most fascinating things to see in these comments section is when the coach literally says one thing and an article comes out the next day saying the exact opposite and ppl believe that article and not the coach’s actual words. It’s really really intriguing to me 😁

It should be a basic skill for a coach/manager to change formation to fit the team’s strength.. for Pioli its must sound like he is inventing 433. lol For contrast.. Ancelotti has a record of using 4 formations in one match while Pioli switching to 433 is a ‘tactical innovation’ according to himself lol We all know Pioli is a one trick pony. That’s not the problem. Pioli should stop sounding this pathetic. 433 aint no innovation.
it doesnt matter how good or bad the mercato is. Pioli using 433 means no matter how Good our mercato can get, we will finish 10th anyway. I hope he proves us wrong but his entire career says otherwise. Hope he studied 433 intensively and at least now knows how it works.
