CorSport: Milan secure gritty win vs. Fiorentina but consistency is now needed

The most important thing for AC Milan during their home game against Fiorentina last night was to win by any means, and they managed to do so thanks to Theo Hernandez’s penalty.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports this morning, the three points obtained against Fiorentina are precious. They arrived after 49 days without a win in the league, after four matches in which just two points were collected.

They also arrived with what felt like half the team unavailable, due to injuries and suspensions, meaning team unity and group sacrifice were crucial. Stefano praised his players’ bonding together, which is sometimes necessary to overcome dark moments.

“We played the game we needed to get out of a delicate moment. Now we have to suffer,” he said. And there was real suffering. However, the difficult part comes now because now Milan must find consistency, which they have not really done since the start of the season.

Often a gritty performance like yesterday’s can serve to get back into the running, to cling to some certainties again, but Milan must now be rebuilt in the matches to come. This is something that Pioli is aware of.

“Apart from this, it is certainly not a single victory that will allow us to overcome the difficult moment. In the next challenges I expect confirmations in terms of continuity because I know I know very well what it means not to win for four league games at a club like Milan,” he added.

The players who will be available again it will be fundamental in the long run to rediscover the lost quality, and Pioli knows this too: “I am convinced that over time we will return to the quality and intensity that have always characterised our football.”
