CorSport: The latest on Leao’s renewal at Milan amid €19m Sporting verdict

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao, along with Lille, has been ordered to compensate Sporting Lisbon for his unlawful departure a few years back. It’s something that certainly will affect the renewal talks with AC Milan, a report claims.

The Portuguese winger will have to pay €9.5m to Sporting and Lille will have to pay the same amount, making for €19m in total. Obviously, it’s a lot of money and this will inevitably affect the renewal talks with Milan.

According to Corriere Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), Milan are pushing for the renewal despite the fact that the current deal will expire in 2024. Both parties want to continue together but there is still distance on the salary.

Milan want to renew until 2027 but due to the verdict, Leao has raised his demands slightly. As said, both parties want to continue together but in the worst-case scenario, the Rossoneri are protected by the €150m release clause in Leao’s contract.

Of course, should any big clubs come knocking, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara will hear them out but they won’t sell Leao on the cheap.

    1. If they told him they will pay half of any fine he gets before it was know how much was it, he would have probably already signed. I always saw Milan as a club with class, not this.
