CorSport: Milan expect ‘mega’ Leao bids as Mbappe nears €400m Real Madrid deal

By Oliver Fisher -

There are increasingly insistent rumours that Kylian Mbappe will join Real Madrid in the summer, and that may reportedly spark a domino effect involving Rafael Leao.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews), the feeling is that Mbappe will leave PSG this summer at the end of his contract and will sign with Real Madrid , the club where he has always declared that he wanted to play.

It is a movement which, if it materialises, will also affect Milan because Leao is at the top of their list of targets to replace the Frenchman.

In the event that Mbappè actually signs on a free transfer for Real Madrid – in a deal worth over €400m over the next five years – then PSG director Luis Campos wants Leao.

He brought Leao from Sporting CP to Lille when he worked for Les Dogues, and PSG could present a ‘mega offer’ this summer for the Portuguese winger, who they saw up close in the Champions League this season.

A possible negotiation will start on the basis that Leao has a €175m release clause which was inserted as part of his renewal last year, but it is well known that the Parisians have plenty of money.

The feeling is that a series of offers worth €100m could arrive from Paris and that Milan, at that point, will have to think about whether to accept them or not. Much will also depend on the will of the player.

One thing is now known: the Rossoneri do not consider anyone untransferable if a right offer arrives, as the case of Sandro Tonali last summer teaches this.

Leao has never expressed the desire to leave and he is also the highest paid in the squad, but if the management were to deem a hypothetical offer to be fair, they could accept it and have a big summer budget.

    1. Agreed. Pay the full clause. For once can we sell players for high amount? Tonali was sold below market when you consider what Chelsea paid for Caelcedo and Arsenal for Rice.

Thanks to Maldini who got Leao to resign AND inserted that huge release clause.

      1. Scenario: What if Leao is not worth 175m at market, but more like 125m (as well all ought to know, buyout clauses do not necessarily equal market value). PSG refuses to pay the clause, we refuse to accept 125m.

Question: Are we better off keeping Leao and trying to find a good solution at striker, CDM and CB with the “normal” budget (let’s say 50m), or would it make more sense to take the 125m and use that plus 50m (ironically 175m) to source a Leao replacement (may not even need one since Pulisic is a natural LW and we have Chuk), a top striker (est. cost 40-60m), a top CDM (~40m) and a top CB (~40-50m)?

It seems kind of short sighted to insist on the buyout clause and risk getting nothing given our needs, if we could still get a substantial amount for Leao and fix all of our holes.

  1. +100 million and sold, which is also fine and plenty for a good ACM transfer window.
A start striker, a new LW, a DCM and fillings for the rest and we are good to go.

    Forza Milan

  2. Time to sell Leao and I would suggest Milan sell Maignan as well. With 175m for Leao and 60m for Maignan we will have more than enough money to strengthen our squad to challenge Inter and Juventus easily next season.

We can get David De Gea on a free transfer. Replace Pioli with a top coach like Conte or Klopp.

3 people should go next season and they are Pioli and his staff Osti along with Leao and Maignan.

    1. Let’s go all in and offer Theo as well while we’re at it right? For like 50 millions? We desperately need another overhaul and we need to get rid of players that are currently not in form. Oh and need to make sure they are each around 20 million and from foreign league.

      1. Don’t worry, we will use data and algorithm to find them. We will get like 3 left wingers, 3 left backs and no defensive midfielders because who needs defensive midfielders when you can score right ?

      2. Exactly. These fickle fans seem so excited and jump at the chance to sell a core player and think we will automatically be a better TEAM??? LOL.

That is NOT how winning teams are built. That’s how a club makes PROFIT – but NOT how a team WINS. There is a huge difference. It’s so sad to hear the fans on this forum scream to sell sell sell – Leao, Mike, Theo, Tomori, etc…..what a disgrace.

But this is REDBIRD. Profit not titles. The model is Atalanta. No surprise there. What is surprising is how many fans here have drunk the kool aid thinking this sell star players and buy cheaper younger replacements is the way to win. WOW. Doesn’t work that way friends. And you also think Redbird will spend every penny back into the team? 🤔 we shall see.

Winning takes time and teams are built through a culture and vision through wins and more so by the defeats. Some understand that, sadly others don’t – like this ownership and I guess some fans here.

        1. Thanks for this, you don’t sell your core but create more core players but sell the core that have been overwhelmed by another core that’s how a winning is built. Now romour is doing the rounds again as Inter wants to poach Rabiol on the free again and now Calhanoglu has become one best midfielders in Serie A because AC Milan refused to keep its cores, imagine Kessie still in AC Milan midfield.

        2. A good team would not sell their best player, some of the fans here are naïve, san Siro is filled up because the fans came to see Leao first then others. sell this sell that, that ain’t Milan, this is not Atalanta

  3. People became greedy overnight. Leao isn’t even worth 70M let alone 170M. Anything over 100M is fine. Ofc we are gonna get a 20M replacement so in the end it will be lose lose for us. I’d like them see sign that Bakayoko kid from Psv and just move Puli on the left

    1. Yeah. If he wants to go, then he’s going to go, and I agree that anything over 100M is fair. But even with his dip in form this year, there’s no denying that he’s a unique talent that won’t be possible to replace. That doesn’t mean that the team necessarily has to get worse, but they won’t find any one player who can replace what Leao is capable of.

  4. I think it’s pretty nailed on that he’ll leave in the summer. At least he had the decency to sign a new contract so that Milan will get some money for him, unlike various others.

  5. We should not be looking to sell but if they will pay 130+ and he wants to go then let him, with that money plus other sells like cdk, krunic, saelemaekers, messias plus standard budget we will have 200 million+ to spend massive

    1. Good point. This will effectively render Milan a midtable team and we will lose some of that star appeal for future recruitment. If the scudetto core is disturbed (Leao, Theo, Mike, Bennacer), we might as well dismantle this project and start all over again to remain in the doldrums for another 3 seasons. Tonali was an unfortunate sacrifice that never should have happened. I don’t see Milan functioning without Leao, he just bring that mental element, that surprised fear factor that Inter has in Lautaro, Juve in Chiesa, Napoli in Khava…

      1. to add more, even when we think he doesn’t play well, he still has hand in the goals score, draw up 2-3 defenders to him and other attackers can shine, he is the heart of this team

  6. I see that many here have started to think much more rationally about how to run and build a sports club, and how success is achieved! This kind of transfer is still far from reality, but we all know that lately there are many who have problems with excess money and are not very rational with them, so hell, why not use them if we are able! For me, no player is that valuable if we can buy three or four players for him, who can maybe take our game to the next level. The team is more important than each individual !

    1. How to run and build a sports club in the same way of Atalanta or Red Bull or Monaco. By selling your best players and never win trophy. The previous management proved that you can win with severe financial restrictions. The current management proves that turnover and trading makes you fight for 4th spot and UEL.

  7. I’m going to remind you all that supported the sale of rafa Leao if it eventually materialize. Who on the earth loses his best player which you can hardly replace, I mean why can’t Liverpool sell Mo Salah who happens to be their best player to Saudi league because of the huge money? See big teams think beyond money ok, so don’t be greedy, our concern should be how we gonna upgrade our team level by bringing in more quality player that will make us direct rival or be on per with Inter and Juventus. You’re here saying Leao should be sold. Wtf 😒

  8. I feel so old now. Since when ACM turned into busness like this? I missed the old ACM where the word family means a lot to them lol

    1. Gone are those days when we romanticized what meant to be Milan player or a fan. You can see fans nowadays, these young, new ones, they don’t really care. They want a shiny new toy every summer. God forbid a star player catches bad form. They violently call for his head. No more respect, patience or appreciation.

      1. From a sociological perspective, it seems that this generation born with social media is addicted to short-term dopamine shots from the reward circuit. Even FIFA is thinking about how to evolve football, with 90-mn games too long for most youths, maybe by shortening games or promoting short highlights (à la Vine/TikTok), to catch the overexposed young brains (also happens to older generations, but not as common).

      2. the young ones now, lack respect and don’t understand what a big team is all about. The mbappe of this word was outshine by Leao, when both team met, Patience is key Rafa is irreplaceable right now in the current Milan squad

    2. Go ask Galliani this. He and berlo are the ones who lead the club to the point where it was 2 much for them to handle. Was it that hard to adjuste to a bit more sustainable model after Don Carlo? 2 Old exp cats like that.. couldnt evolve. Let their “family” down

  9. Hope Management and Coach Learn from DUO MERDA Intersh*t and Juvesh*t how to win games with available players. We should buy inter’s LM10, Calafiori, Kvara, Orsolini, Ricci, Buongiorno, maybe we’re to go for Scudetti

  10. If leao sold to PSG, I hope Milan will sign coach gasparini. So he can rebuild the squad as he wants. Build with young player it’s Milan tagline for now. Hehe

  11. sell leao
    buy vlahovic

4321 maignan theo tomori thiaw teraciano bennacer tijj musah pulisic/adli jovic vlahovic

sub : simic, bartesaghi, calabria, gabbia, rlc, ricci, redondo, chuk, camarda, okafor
