CorSport: Milan initiate talks with Aston Villa midfielder amid expiring contract

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are looking for a midfielder on the market and as the Renato Sanches pursuit has seemingly become difficult, the Rossoneri could turn elsewhere. Aston Villa man Douglas Luiz is one of the alternatives.

Stefano Pioli has asked the management to bring in a midfielder this summer to cover for the departure of Franck Kessie, who has left on a free transfer. Sanches was seen as the primary target for a long time but that pursuit has become difficult.

According to Corriere Dello Sport (via MilanNews), Milan have initiated talks with the entourage of Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian midfielder has just one year left on his contract with Aston Villa and could thus be sold this summer.

The initial asking price is around €25m, but the player could potentially push for the move and thus get it down a bit. Milan offered €18m plus bonuses for Sanches and that’s probably the figure they want to end up on.

  1. Oh ok when boubacar kamara were expiring contract you guy didn’t get him now a not good enough player you want him good

    1. The guy is a full Brazilian international, and plays week in and out in the Premier League, this isn’t someone from Torino or Udinese, this guy can play and does it at the highest level, and he’s never injured. Never forget Tomori was a Premier League reject and look what happened to him, Douglas is a Full Brazilian international and first team player for a Premier League club.

    2. Kamara has gotten a salary of more than any Milan player currently earns. There aren’t many players in Italy on the same money he’s getting at Aston Villa.

Unfortunately, there’s a good chance Mr Luiz will see this and realise that he’ll be in a very strong negotiating position if he waits a year and is a free agent. One year left is not the opportunity it once was because free agency is so much more attractive to players.

      1. Luiz is probably already on a very high ‘Premier League’ salary at our place, so if he is coming to you, he probably won’t be getting much of a pay raise. And while the Italian League isn’t as strong as it was in the 90’s, early 2000’s, when some of the best players in the world trotted out against each other in Serie A, AC Milan still has a lot of pull purely for their name alone. But he may want to wait until he is on a free for the extra bonus he would get. Or he may still sign a contract at Villa. Considering the wealth & ambition of the owners, & a decent season, he may want to carry on with us & see how far we can go… I like him as a player, but as I said earlier, he is a Jack of all trades & master of none. But as a gold medal Olympic winner, he is still a very decent player to have around…

  2. Not a bad option, Douglas has proven to be a very decent player, plus we score with the 50% tax break so we will be paying a lot less in the long run. A full Brazilian international with no injury problems and solid Premier League experience so we know he can run all day and has very good physical attributes. He might just be the safer bet over injury prone Renato

  3. The 50% tax break for foreign players is not valid anymore. New rules as of 1 July. That is why Inter has moved so quickly when it came to signing Lukaku.

    1. Not true. If not signed before July 1st this year’s taxes are not discounted as they would not be in Italy for over half the year. However, you could not register a player before that date, not 100% sure how anyone who signed this summer would be eligible. You would get the tax break for the rest of their contract starting January 1st as the new tax year begins then.

      1. Because you don’t understand how it works. Deadline is 2nd July. So anyone registered TODAY and TOMORROW does get into the growth decree. Really simple. If you live for more than half a year anywhere you become a tax resident of that country.

    2. Not new rules, you just need to understand the current ones. 183 days living in a country in a calendar year. Until 2nd July. Don’t listen to WCSG, he doesn’t understand and is “explaining” to others.

  4. But anyone who knows anything about this player, and can describe his characteristics. Form youtube he seems like a defensive midfielder – a workhorse with good feet and hard in the tackle.

    1. As a Villa fan who has watched him a lot, he is not a defensive midfielder. He lacks the positional discipline of a CDM & that is why Villas defence were left exposed so many times last season. He is a tidy midfielder though. Good feet. Decent enough passing & tackling. Poor at set pieces. Can dally on the ball a bit. Likes to get forward. Does nothing once he gets there, but he seems a Jack of all trades & master of none. But I can definitively say, he is NOT a CDM…
