CorSport: Pioli tested a three-man backline against Monza – first indications

Stefano Pioli decided to field a three-man backline for AC Milan’s second half against Monza, already up 2-0 thanks to Brahim Diaz. The system worked and the manager was pleased with the result, a report claims.

Brahim Diaz helped set up a very comfortable second half for Milan after scoring two very good goals in the first 45 minutes. Pioli took the opportunity to test a three-man backline as he subbed off Sergino Desy (fatigue) for Pierre Kalulu.

As highlighted by Corriere Dello Sport (via MilanNews), the change of system worked as Milan got even more control in the midfield. The defensive players worked very well together and the Rossoneri obviously managed to extend their lead.

The goal that Monza scored had nothing to do with the three-man backline, being a free-kick, and the first indications are thus positive for Pioli. With Simon Kjaer back, and also Matteo Gabbia doing well, three at the back is a good option for Milan.
