Daniel Maldini talks decision to join Empoli, Milan ‘hope’ and sacking of Paolo

By Oliver Fisher -

Daniel Maldini has shed some light on his decision to leave AC Milan on another loan spell for the season ahead, this time with Empoli.

Maldini had an up and down year at Spezia last season, both due to the injury that put him out of action for the last part of the season and due to the relegation of the Ligurian side to Serie B after the play-off defeat against Verona.

However, the attacking midfielder still managed to show some glimpses of his potential, amassing 20 appearances across league and cup and scoring three goals, one of which was against Milan at the San Siro and another against Inter.

Now he has chosen to join Empoli on a season-long loan deal to stay in Serie A, and it will have an option to buy included but crucially a buy-back too. His presentation press conference was today, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera.

Why did you choose Empoli?

“I chose Empoli because they were the first club interested and I felt their desire to make me come here.”

Paolo Zanetti said this could be the right place for you to explode, was that one of the reasons why you accepted Empoli?

“I’ll give everything, I think it’s the right place for me. I hope to be physically well and then give everything.”

What were your first impressions?

“First impressions are positive, I can play almost anywhere up front. I really like how Empoli play.”

More specifically, where do you see yourself as a tactical position?

“I can play anywhere, certainly this type of game played by Empoli suits my characteristics.”

Did you already know any team-mates?

“Only Piccoli with whom I have played in the national team. But the group made a good impression on me, we will have time to get to know each other.”

A question that a hundred people must have asked you, how much does it mean to have your surname?

“I’ve gotten used to it by now, there are pros and cons. But I don’t think about it much anymore.”

Do you see yourself at Milan in a few years?

“I don’t know, I’m Rossonero and therefore my hope is that. But you never know…”

What is the effect of not seeing your dad at Milan?

“Clearly I’m a little sorry, but these things don’t depend on us so I can’t say much.”
