Deschamps confirms that Maignan is France’s new No.1 goalkeeper

France head coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan will take Hugo Lloris’ place as the new number one.

It was announced back in January that Lloris had confirmed his international retirement at the age of 36. It is big shoes for anyone to fill given that the Spurs stopped was a World Cup winner in 2018 and made a record number of appearances for France, 145 in all.

Lloris made his France debut in November 2008 in a 0-0 draw with Uruguay and nearly 15 years late he finally called quits on his career, having worn the armband on 121 occasions including in three major finals.

Deschamps spoke at a press conference just before the training camp that France will have during the international break and he was asked who will take the gloves from Lloris, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“The number one position belongs to Mike Maignan. There will be a hierarchy. It’s important,” he said.
