L’Equipe: Deschamps expected to call Maignan up but final assessment will be postponed

By Oliver Fisher -

Didier Deschamps is expected to call up Mike Maignan for the France squad ahead of the World Cup as the goalkeeper is still confident that he will be able to recover in time to play, a report claims.

The tournament kicks off in exactly 12 days and the Milan stopper is working hard to definitively overcome the calf muscle injury he sustained back on October 19 after a previous problem he had suffered in the same area.

According to today’s edition of L’Equipe (via Calciomercato.com), Maignan should be on the squad list for Qatar that coach Deschamps will confirm tomorrow, but it will then be the daily evolution of his physical condition that will guide the assessments of the medical staff.

They intend to wait until the last moment before making a final decision about Maignan’s use or a possible cut from the squad, with France’s World Cup debut scheduled for exactly two weeks against Australia.

Only then will it be clear whether Maignan – as Lloris’s deputy – will be able to fulfil his dream of taking part in his first career World Cup or if his return to the field will have to be postponed to the resumption of Serie A, set for 3 January 2023 against Salernitana.
