Donnarumma praises ‘very strong’ Milan: “It was difficult to leave”

By Oliver Fisher -

The appointment is set for October 25th at the Parco des Princes in Paris, where Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Paris Saint-Germain will face off against his former club AC Milan.

The goalkeeper came through the youth academy at Milan and looked destined to become a future club icon, but decided not to renew his deal in 2021 and instead went to the Ligue 1 giants on a free, which aroused anger among Rossoneri fans.

Amid rumours that PSG could offer him to Milan in a swap deal for Mike Maignan, fate pitted Donnarumma against his old club in the Champions League group stages, with the first meeting set for just under one month.

Donnarumma spoke during an interview with SportMediaset looking ahead to the game that will take place in October, and he started by reflecting on his time at Milan.

“They are a very strong team, it won’t be easy to face them. I spent many years at the Rossoneri and it was difficult to leave Milan. The first months in Paris were a bit tough, I went out of my comfort zone. Now I’m settling in, I’m learning the language and it’s going well,” he said (via PianetaMilan).

During the most recent international break, Donnarumma returned to San Siro but with the Italy shirt and he was booed by large sections of the crowd before their game against North Macedonia.

“Living with certain comments is not easy, but you have to learn to distance yourself and work hard. We are humans, not robots: some mistakes can happen.

“Am I the idol of younger players? I hope to set a good example, on and off the pitch. I dream of reaching important goals, such as the Champions League and the World Cup with Italy. Ballon d’Or? It’s not easy, but it’s nice to dream…”

Donnarumma continues to follow Serie A even from Paris, and he believes that there could be a very intense race to win the title this season given the amount of quality teams.

“The Italian sides are very strong, last year they did well in Europe and I am sure that this season too they will be able to have their say.

“In addition to Milan, there is Lazio who have started very well. Inter proved to be on par with City and Napoli played great in 2022-23: now they have started a bit badly, but they have all it takes to get back on their feet.”

  1. 8Mio Net was not enough for him. He rather followed the Money and also left for free.
But thats Business. He gets the Boo that he reserved.

  2. Wasn’t that difficult though, was it Gigio? Just needed higher numbers and you were as good as gone. I don’t envy the reception he will get at our home game.

    Good Luck.
