Doubts arise as Pioli continues to mistreat Adli with seven-minute cameo

By Isak Möller -

Yacine Adli made his first appearance since October last night, getting seven minutes plus stoppages on the pitch against Fiorentina. A short window in which he managed a hockey assist, raising doubts about Stefano Pioli.

The French midfielder was brought in from Bordeaux on a permanent deal worth around €9m in the summer of 2021. Milan agreed to leave him at the club on loan for one year and the feeling was that it would make him even more ready.

Instead, Adli has amassed just 121 minutes on the pitch this season. It’s a sensational stat especially if you consider the injury struggles Milan have had. Still, in his seven-minute cameo last night, he got a hockey assist.

The midfielder picked out Alexis Saelemaekers with a lovely pass, showing his ability to read the game. This action begs the question, why has he not been given the chance more often?

Even though he ended up making an impact, the feeling was that Pioli was protecting himself with that substitution. At 2-0 down, with Fiorentina still very much dominating, he threw on Adli. In a hopeless situation, in other words.

Players like Adli, who haven’t got a lot of playing time and lack confidence, need the trust of the manager to fully excel. They need to be given proper chances and not just a couple of minutes here and there, especially in games when there’s really nothing they can do to raise their confidence.

Adli was brought in because of his technical ability and his vision for the game, but no one can expect him to showcase this in just 121 minutes. If Milan’s policy is to invest in youth, then the youth needs to be utilised on the pitch.

The same argument, in fact, can be made in Aster Vranckx or Tommaso Pobega’s case as Tiemoue Bakayoko got the nod instead last night.

  1. Mistreat? Really? Maybe Adli is just not good enough defensively or hasn’t adapted to our high pressing style of football yet. If you look at the defensive stats, his last season wasn’t as good as 20/21. I like his style, but perhaps he just isn’t quite ready for Serie A yet.

    1. Calabria, in my opinion, never ever was ready for Serie A, but played a lot. Why Adli, for example, is not used more only Pioli knows. For me this Coach becomes more and more a miracle.

  2. Give Adli a chance at 10. CDK and Diaz are not playing well. Give Adli a chance and he is a wonderful passer ,can read the game better than the two and finish better than CDK and assist better than Diaz.

    1. The problem with Afli is that he tuns around and looks totally lost when in defence. I think this is what Pioli has a problem with. I think Diaz is our best player in AM-position since he has a nice ability to recieve and get the ball forward. I think that was lacking last night without him. Bennacer could be good in that position also. But he isually doesn’t get that high up unfortunately when in his current position. He is very good in tight spots. He is lacking the same skill as Fiaz though and that is the finishing pass. He made a great long pass for Giroud last night which showed a good eye and good foot. Those psses need to come more often. Maignan seems to be our main passer unfortunately

  3. It’s a strange one.

And it can’t be because of his defensive failings because neither Brahim nor CDK offer much in defence either.

And for all the talk of Brahim being able to beat a man he also loses the ball often in our third. In fact the whole team are so sloppy in our third it’s a miracle we don’t concede more.

Pioli obviously prioritises familiarity over ability, and that is something I do admire, and it’s probably been the secret to our success.

The real tragedy is that Adli, like so many others, is the victim of the transfer system.

What a waste of everyone’s time it was bringing him from Bordeaux. Had he stayed at that club, or gone somewhere that didn’t already have 2 players playing in his position, then he could’ve offered the world something more. Instead he’s wasting away on our bench.

  4. i think adli its more reliable for krunic backup. hes good passer, arabic france player also playmaker or striker like zidane, benzema, ben arfa and mourad meghni. and dont forget adli play no. 10 role at bordeaux.

diaz its winger player. so stop please for while to playing diaz again. give some chance for adli.

and the funny things its both of calabria and tonali only can play the right footed, you can see at the milan games. can be a damage for pioli system of play..

  5. Diaz will be gone in a few months and CDK still hasn’t shown anything. Why not give Adli a chance? I’m so tired of Pioli (not just because of this). He’s a mediocre coach who got lucky last season. Let’s face it, the Scudetto was an anomaly, not the new norm for us. We are almost back to our old banter era selves now.

  6. Given Rebic and Origis repeated chances after repeated failures, and given the lack of further developing potential in those players, then why the heck Stefano?!
