Paulo Fonseca spoke to the media after AC Milan’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli this evening. Despite the result, the manager was surprisingly optimistic and even said that he is ‘more confident than ever’.

Milan conceded early in the game and even though they managed to recover a bit, playing-wise that is, the away side were just too clinical and scored again before the break. From there on, it was uphill for Paulo Fonseca and his side.

After the game, Fonseca spoke to DAZN (via MilanNews) and shared his thoughts on what went wrong for the Rossoneri. Despite the situation in the standings, the manager stated that he is ‘more confident than ever’ that Milan are onto something.

On the match…

“If we look at the result, they scored two goals and we scored none despite the chances we had. We conceded a goal after 5 minutes, then we reacted well by playing quality football, they dropped back. It wasn’t easy to create so many chances against a team like Napoli. However, they scored two goals, unfortunately we didn’t.”

On absences…

“I don’t like to make excuses and talk about the absentees. It’s true that important players were missing, but those who played did so well. We are a united team. I’m sure that by playing like this we will have a positive future.”

On the standings…

“I’m more confident than ever because I see how the team is changing and growing. It’s true that the result wasn’t positive, but it’s still early, there are many games to play. I remain confident.”

On growth…

“I don’t like to talk about individuals, I prefer to talk about the team. We made mistakes in the two goals. We have to continue working because we can still improve a lot”.

Milan will take on Monza next, scheduled for this Saturday at 20:45 CET, and winning is the only option for the Rossoneri. Napoli already have a huge advantage and unfortunately, it looks rather unlikely that Fonseca’s men will be able to catch up (at least not anytime soon).

    1. Maybe they will get it right in the end… say in February, and perhaps make a late run for the top four, but the question is more for Cardinale, Ibra and Co. Does Milan have the luxury of that time? Are we ready to sacrifice this season (Scudetto practically gone and we are just hanging on in the UCL), to continue with this Fonseca experiment?

  1. Surprising reaction. While the team did get into dangerous situations, there was no clear tactical route to goal. The positioning of Morata and the arriving 2nd man has to be more clearly defined. In Pioli’s scudetto run it was clear who was on the line and who was ready for the cutback option when the wingers made a run to the byline. Then, taking Musah of the midfield tandem to the right backfired, killing intensity in midfield totally. Basically it’s just a lot of trial and plenty of errors. Most critical though, either Fonseca can’t bring the best out of his players or they are all just not good enough for this level. Look at Lukaku and Krava’s goals. We did not have anything near that level in us. Not even with Leao.

  2. Another masterclaas from conte. He pull out Osimhen and bringing lukaku for big difference. Instant effect and now look at the table, 7 points gap to inter in the 2nd place. Ibra wants him this summer but the management say NO ! Haha.. the management will pay this decision…

  3. These comments!
I like this coach more and more and more.
His delusional level is so high, even the reality can override his thinking.

It fits perfectly with the current owner’s way of thinking.
No wonder he was chosen to coach the club.
    Braaavo!

  4. It’s giving “I’m taking the last 10 minutes wit me”😂 I won’t be delusional because the absentees definitely were a factor, but that just goes back to one thing. The same thing many of us have been complaining about… THE MANAGEMENT. If our team has Emmy, Teraciano, Pav, Musah and RLC as 10 because of some starters being out, then the fault is in the construction of the squad.
No LB replacement, subpar mid replacement, no 10 replacement, the biggest quality our striker has is “hard work” not mocking Morata, but without Puli, where are our goals gonna come from?
Poor planning on recruitment of players, the coach… just underwhelming af!
    Forza Milan

  5. Delusional to think we controlled anything. We had possession, but were toothless in attack. Pavlovic being shoved aside by Lukaku sums up the club’s current standing in the league. We are the underdogs against teams like Napoli.

Folks were against Conte being our coach because of his style of play. At this point, I don’t care about the style of play.
