Fonseca explains selection decisions vs. Atalanta: “Balance and defensive security”

AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca has claimed that the wings are the key to getting the better of Atalanta, while explaining his selection decisions.

Milan’s spirits are better than what they were heading into the November break. A draw against Juventus was followed by wins over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League, Empoli in the league and Sassuolo in the Coppa Italia.

Despite this, the real litmus test comes tonight against Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, who have won eight in a row and scored a league-high 34 goals. Fonseca even said in his pre-match comments that he admires the job that the coach and the club have done, so he realises the task at hand.

Fonseca spoke to Sky moments before kick-off to preview what will be a difficult game, and his words were relayed by MilanNews.

How will you defend against a team like Atalanta?

“We have to defend well, a team like Atalanta creates a lot and is strong on the wings: that’s the key today. We have to defend well to have the chance to attack well.”

How important is this game? And how important would a win be?

“A victory here would bring points that are important and reduces the gap, it would bring a lot of confidence for the future. It is important today to get a good result here and win.”

You have gone back to a previous team, with Musah on the right…

“Since we started with Musah we have found more balance and defensive security, also more aggression. It was important and we hope that we can continue to play good games especially defensively.”
