Furlani dials up the pressure ahead of Newcastle game: “We have to win”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has made it clear that winning is the only option against Newcastle United tonight in what is a ‘final’ for the club.

Milan not only need to beat Newcastle to keep alive their last 16 hopes but they must hope that Borussia Dortmund – who have already secured top spot – do them a favour and win against PSG.

It will not be an easy task though given they will play in front of a hostile St. James’ Park crowd, but in truth the Rossoneri made it difficult for themselves by winning only one of the first five group stage games.

Furlani gave a few short statements to Sky ahead of the lunch about tonight’s match and he made it known that only a victory will be accepted, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“It’s a final, we have to win it. It’s very simple. The boys are focused, we’re coming to play. Let’s hope for the best,” he said.

“Leao? He’s a great champion, having him helps us a lot. Ibrahimovic? Thank goodness he’s back. He’ll bring a lot of things, he’s a winner. I’m happy that we’ll work together.”

In a statement published yesterday, RedBird Capital Partners confirmed that Ibrahimovic is back for a third spell at the club. He is their employee officially and will be the Operating Partner across its Sports and Media & Entertainment investment portfolio as well as a Senior Advisor to the Milan Ownership and Senior Management.

  1. Smuggy McSmugface is right. We have to win. Also, duh lol 😂
He knows it’s going to be a damning indictment on him and his posse over what transpired over the summer if they crash out of Europe altogether

    1. This guy looks like a kid even when in his 40ies, I freaking had a bigger beard when i was 15 😀

As much as i hated Maldini getting sacked and still does i was willing to give the management a chance to prove themselves if they could work some miracles but after reading Paolo’s interview i freaking hate this smug mf’er.

      1. Yea I was also willing to give them a chance too but I will have to side with the one that wore out colours for 25 years and formed the most substantive memories of Milan’s success. Even though I predicted it before the season started I didnt think it would actually pan out almost the exactly 🤦‍♂️. And that’s on them. Their whole reasoning for firing and overhaul rests on this one game boggles my mind

        1. I am still holding judgement and I could be wrong, however, this all started last year when Gerry thought he knew more than Maldini.

Maldini explained the only way to stay competitive for the sucdetto and UCL was more influx of money for transfers and salary and to sack Pioli. Gerry didn’t like that and here come Furlini saying all the things Gerry wanted to hear. Smug business execs thinking they know more about winning than a proven champion.

Now, since they they’ve been wrong on so much, we have 1 game to prove it was the right course of action.

I hope Ibra sees what’s going on and has the cajones to tell Gerry to fire Furlini, sack Pioli and beg Maldini and Massara to come back.

Knowing Ibra, he might actually do that. 😅

  2. Lack of statement of support for Pioli from Milan management combined with statements like this is worrying signs for Pioli. Not that she shouldn’t be worried aside from it given the poor run of form…

Atalanta defeat could be another blessing in disguise and if we do manage a win against NUFC it could serve as a catalyst to turn the season around.

OR we could lose and crash out of Europe, heralding a change. But i don’t know if sacking Pioli mid-season would do more harm than good.

  3. this doodoo for brains needed to sign Thuram or Taremi, not Ibra..was arrogant enough to think he could outsmart their agents and play hardmoneylowball with them…now we are level with Antwerp for goals in the CL due to his dumb decisions and our management being more interested in running a proof of concept for software instead or football club.

You will be canned by the end of the season. Snake, slithering scum.

    1. Unfortunately I think Cardinale has full trust in Furlani as he has worked with him in other ventures so I simply doesn’t see it happen but I might obviously be wrong in that estimate.

      1. He is a Elliot guy, Redbird’s people were with the club during their time. Clearly the club purchase has some conflicting interests and skeletons in the closet. There were more viable and financially stable options at our disposal for potential suitors. Elliott thought they could pull a quick one, use Redbird for the time beeing to drive the price of the team up, then sell with their stake they retained. The Cardinale guy was at Goldman Sachs, Elliott kept some equity with a seat on the board of directors. It doesn’t pass the smell test. The way this team is managed tells you, they are operating for shareholders and profit margins with tge least expenditures possible. Gazidis too was notorious for turning Arsenal upside down by destroying their on field product with ridiculous transfer and wage cap policies. They never recovered from these Yanks sticking their nose in the business.

They get Maldini out because he was part of history they want to erase here. He would never bend down to these people and offered too much resistance for their liking. He told them the team was a crucial junction, selling last summer was a perfect way for both ownership groups to excuse not reinvesting our winnings into the team. Also they gave Maldini a bogus wage bill to work with before firing him, then upped it with Furliani came in. This whole story is a complete mess.

Had Maldini been given an extra 25 to 50 million a year like Furball here, we could have kept everyone that they let walk for nothing and we took three years to not replace yet.

Think we could have only needed to purchase two players over the last 3 seasons if we retained our best players and had a better team right now, with the possibility to cash in on one of them we extended. They refused to give him the leverage and financial pull to renew them. They said keep pushing them to the end of their deals and try to make them fold to take undervalued contracts to stay. Don’t believe me, just see what they did with Taremi and Thuram, it exemplifies they rather gamble on lowballing people than offering garantees while being sustainable to our best players. These people are a threat to our club. They are running it like a bank, not sports team.

        1. Oh ok I must have mixed it up with the Cardinale fella you mentioned. I do think that the wage cap made sense at the time Gazzidis joined us considering all of our debts at least to some extent.

I agree and Maldini most likely would have already been sacked last year had it not been for the scudetto win of the past season and I agree they definitely showed some double standards in how they magically upped the bar for bills.

          Absolutely.

Again I agree but unfortunately I think they will probably stay for the next decade but maybe not Furlani if he wasn’t the Cardinale man.

  4. We should turn things around tonight ,especially when we have pulisic back to his best position .Loftus cheek will be a plus in the midfield. The best news Rafeol leao back ,he will cause Newcastle problems, as will our centre forward,,sir Olivier Giroud,,,another goal for him tonight ..Well don’t rule that out .

    1. They should probably have scored 3 or 4 goals in the first Newcastle Utd fixture at least from what i can recollect Leaos backheel attempt is pretty unforgivable if we bow out of the tournament considering the match ended 0-0.
