Matteo Gabbia took responsibility for not reacting quick enough on Genoa’s goal in the draw with AC Milan at San Siro tonight.
Genoa got themselves ahead in the game in the first half when a cross was flicked in by Lorenzo Colombo, who had beaten his compatriot and former team-mate Gabbia to the ball.

The away side would hold onto that lead until the 92nd minute, when Rafael Leao rose highest to head in a corner to level proceedings. Stanciu missed a penalty kick in the 98th minute, and it eventually finished 1-1.
It is more dropped points for Milan against a side struggling at the other end of the table after previous draws with Pisa, Parma and Sassuolo plus the defeat to Cremonese in round one. As a result, Inter are now three points clear at the top.
Gabbia takes responsibility
Gabbia spoke to DAZN after the final whistle to try and assess a night with a lot of incidents but ultimately the points shared. MilanPress transcribed his words to the broadcaster.
What is the feeling like in the dressing room after that result?
“We’re coming back with a bitter taste in our mouths. We wanted to win. We started well with a few chances, I hit the crossbar and then made a mistake that led to their goal.
“In the second half, we tried to get back on track, but the goal came too late. We need to improve. We have a great staff, and we’ll try to work as hard as we can starting next Sunday.”
How are you feeling personally?
“I’m fine, the injury is behind me, I thank the medical staff. I should have beaten Colombo to the ball [for the goal], but I focused on the player, and he beat me to it. Unfortunately, that happens sometimes, but I take responsibility. We dropped two points on situations where we work every week.”
Are you feeling the pressure of keeping up with Inter and Napoli?
“We don’t look at Inter or Napoli, we look at ourselves. When you play for Milan, you have to win every game. It’s this shirt that demands it. We try to do our best in every game.”
captain material. i still think de winter would of been much better for this game but gabbia owning up is something i expected but i still like the gesture.
You can’t even guard Lorenzo Colombo. What about guarding a striker like Marcus Thuram or Erling Haaland? You’re not at the same level playing at Milan.
You forget that he previously had Hojlund, David, Openda, and Vlahovic.
Come on, man, all players have bad days.
Look what Colombo did before the goal. He “threw” Gabbia behind him and second later ball came to his foot. It was a brilliant move by the striker.
It’s no wonder Max Allegri is so keen to bring Gatti to Milan.
Not good enough to be leading the line.
He’s not Calabria level, but Milan need to upgrade his position if they want to become more competitive.
He is literally our best defender by a mile. You sir are one of the many italian haters supporting milan. Shame.
One slip after carrying this team for last season and a good portion of this one, no biggie. He deserves the armband.

Neither pavlovic nor Tomori can play in Gabbia’s place. De winter got owned 2x by burly players and only started improving recently.
Let’s hope today was just an off day for Gabbia. He seems calmer than Tomori or Pavlovic, a trait that the main CB needs.
Continuity is what is needed. I think Perhaps De Winter should have started the game as it would have been better for him to have continuity and gel more with the other defenders. Gabbia is already a started and should have had the day off to recover and be fresh 110% for fiorentina. those are his type of games against strong strikers.
the coach messed up this starting lineup. plus i would have started fulkrug and puli. it just makes more sense and leoa can come in later on the left wing also preserving him for the next game. Fofana really needs to hit the bench and give others abit more chance like ricci and jashari. we need to get those players in rhythm and contributing while at the same time resting key players.
im betting alegri will make some changes to the team for sundays game and those players coming in wont have that perfect rhythm with the starters. we probably win the game but through individual brilliance.
Agree, would have been a chance to give some a rest and the others a chance to play, especially Jashari and Ricci. I bet both would have had a little more motivation and take it less easy.
Putting Fofana on the bench is more than overdue.
