Gian Piero Gasperini aimed some obvious jabs at AC Milan and Paulo Fonseca following Atalanta’s 2-1 win at Gewiss Stadium. In addition to the Rossoneri manager’s comments, he also spoke about the team’s attitude.
Gasperini was missing on the touchline last night due to a suspension, watching the game from the stands instead. His assistant did a good job and Atalanta were able to claim all three points thanks to a late goal, though a deserved one.
Milan only had two shots on target, both of which came in the first half, and they quite clearly played for a draw in the second half. Speaking to Sky Italia after the game, as transcribed by Football Italia, Gasperini aimed a few jabs at Milan.
On their willingness to win…
“In the second half, Milan did less, but we never settled for a point, we never wasted time, never threw ourselves to the ground, we wanted to win the game and were rewarded for that attitude. Indeed, Retegui could’ve scored a third in stoppages.”
On Fonseca’s officiating comments…
“If this is an attempt to talk about something else and distract attention away from the match, then that’s his prerogative.
“The De Ketelaere goal was an extraordinary leap into the sky. I don’t remember any other incidents that were debatable, unless maybe some throw-ins.”
Replace Fonsy with Gaspy quick before we’re outta european championship.
Forget about it Roses, not gonna happen in 1000 years.
Atalanta has never won the Serie A title and he could very likely be the man to bring them that glory this season.
That is what stories of legends is made of and I come to think about Cagliaris scudetto winning team of the 1960ies. On the other hand saving AC Milans cl qualification is just what is expected and nothing to write home about.
Add to that Gasperini is an aging man in his mid to late 60ies and has been at Atalanta for a long time which has helped him develope the ideas of the squad and club. Something like that doesn’t happen over night and our issues probably wont be solved so quickly either.
Ownership, Management, Fonseca and some players will have to take the bulk of the blame here and I highly doubt that there is a great willingness to do that as it would mean that they would admit their own failures and a lot of heads would roll (minus gerry of course)
The best thing we can hope for is that fans revolt in front of Milanello and Casa Milan but even that is probably a pipe dream.
Atalanta 1st and we are lingering in 7th but it’s expected with the mediocre management, coach and mindset.
I definitely think if Fonseca is fired which he should be then our management should get the boot as well. None of it will happen though.
A lot of clubs had an opening over last few years and nobody bothered to hire him. I wonder why?
All i know is I wouldn’t risk it at Milan. There are better candidates out there. Gasperini is a walking flop at top clubs imao
The flipside to that was why would he leave what he took years to build. The fruits of his labour are there to see. Europa League success is nothing to sniff at. Now they’re legit competing for the Scudetto, fans love you etc yea I wouldn’t leave either
But apart from that one EL they’re pretty underwhelming.. don’t even qualify for cl every season.
I’ll give him kudos for longevity at atalanta but wouldn’t have him at Milan. He’s not the guy to bring us to the next lvl.
Ofc neither is fonsco.
Palladino might be the one
You really call what Gasperini did at Atalanta “underwhelming”? Atalanta was a mid-low table team before him, fighting to stay in Serie A.
untrue.. before him they finished 13th,17th,11th,15th and 12. Not exactly relegation lvl like you’d have people believe.
I’d say Percassi can take a lot of credit for what’s happening at atalanta in the last decade/14 years.
I’m not saying that Percassi didn’t play a part in the success which he certainly did but your numbers there pretty much proved his comment “Atalanta was a mid-low table team before him, fighting to stay in Serie A.”
all teams are fightin’ to stay in serie a…
ill say this a millon times if i have to.. its easy to overachieve in a midtable club.. there are no expectations
still the numbers did indeed suggest that they was a mid-low tabled team before his arrival.
If it is so easy then why isn’t there more small teams fighting at the top of the league over the years.
Last year Bologna of course come to mind, then Sassuolo and initially Parma before they grew big in the 90ies. Of those teams only Parma was consistently performing at the top. Now Atalanta,
Obviously there has been small teams performing for a short while as well but didn’t last beyond a couple of seasons.
That’s over 30 years of Serie A so I really has to disagree here but that’s also fine as we doesn’t have to agree upon everything.
With all due respect and I mean in respect that is a bit nonsical because the only current big club he has coached was Inter and yes he failed miserably there but also only got 5 matches, I would argue if he was in his late 50ies or early 60ies then he could be given a long term project at a big club and succeed. Its no small feat to make Atalanta a top club that consistently has been in cl year after year and also winning the Europa League while developing great talents each year and then seeing them sold to start all over the next year while still being very competitive. Now he might even win Atalanta them their first ever scudetto if they can keep up the pace,
When Gasp was at Inter, he asked for young and fit players that would have cost little but would have fit into his system. Instead, the Inter owner gave him an overpriced and semi-retired Diego Foran who could not run and therefore did not fit into the high pressing system Gasperini wanted to play. The club failed him, he did not fail Inter s history has proven. Any club would be happy to have the combination of results and revenue that Gasp generates.
Gasp 100% is not a big club coach. His Inter stint was a failure. He’s a God at Bergamo, should stay there. And if he wins the Scudetto (I hope) they will put a statue of him there.
Buddy, no Europe next year, back to pre 2020 era. Sarri is the only person who can save Milan.
I agree on Sarri – he would be a good coach for Milan.
We need whosoever holds this team with the position, formarion, and tactic to win title.
This old fart was talking sh*t about Milan last season as well.
That’s not talking sh*t, it’s facts. The referee warned Mike not to waste time during goal kick, I looked at the clock and it wasn’t even 64-th minute of the game.
He ain’t lying tho
I hate this guy more than just about anyone. Unfortunately he is correct.
At every opportunity Gargamel/Gasperini diminishes opponents. Same was last year when Atalanta against Milan get help from referee with unbeliveable penalty. I really hope Atalanta, continues in the same still as until now, never win the league with him. 👎👎
