Gattuso: “Fifth place absolutely wouldn’t be a failure”

By Ivan Stoev -

Milan are playing Frosinone on Sunday and coach Gattuso said he will be paying a tribute to Max Allegri and Daniele De Rossi who are leaving Juventus and Roma respectively.

The coach then proceeded with the answering of questions about the team, targets and achievements.

“There are two games left and we’re still playing our objective,” he said.

“Allegri’s numbers speak for themselves, the trophies he’s won are in history. The relationship I have with him… we’ve had lots of hugs, lots of fights and lots of laughs.

“He’s the real deal, he deserves all the best and tomorrow his players and fans will greet him with affection.

“However, we must only think about ourselves and our own pride. Juventus have shown on the field the team they are and the mentality they have.

“The thing I liked best about De Rossi over the years, apart from the technical and tactical improvements he’s made, is how he’s grown every year on a human level.

“Every time he made a mistake he apologised with his face. He already reasons as a Coach, he says things as they are.

“I wish him all the best. Roma will notice when he’s no longer in their dressing room.”

The former Italy midfielder’s own future has come into question in recent weeks, while Leonardo and Suso have not been given an easy ride by the press.

“Both the club and I have put aside our small talk to reach our objective. There will be time to talk about the future.

“Piatek has to make himself available to the team and not only think about himself, but in that sense I’ve seen him very focused.

“I haven’t been thinking about the timing of games. I’m only thinking about putting out the best team.

“I believe in good faith. All the teams are putting in a lot of effort. We must only think about playing our own game.

“Don’t make me angry. You [journalists] are the ones who have written everything, I have no problem with Leonardo.

“All of you have invented things. On a human level there’s great respect, period.

“Suso’s an important player. You said I had to leave him out that and he couldn’t even stand up.

“Milan haven’t had a player with 10 assists in the League for 10 years. After that, it’s normal that there are ups and downs.

“Biglia is available, he’ll be on the bench tomorrow.”

Finally, the 42-year-old all but confirmed Ignazio Abate would be leaving the club.

“He arrived as a kid, every day I baptised him with slaps. I’m sorry for him, he added value in this dressing room. He gave us so much.

“Fifth place absolutely wouldn’t be a failure, not because I want credit myself, plus what would Roma and Lazio say?

“There’s regret because for two months we’ve had our fate in our hands and we dropped so many points, but it’s not a failure.

“We must do our best, pick up as many points as possible and then we’ll see.”
