Gattuso: “It was a decent performance, we lost to an unlucky incident”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso believes his side were “unlucky” to lose 1-0 against Sampdoria at the Marassi on Saturday.

A mistake from Gianluigi Donnarumma howler in the opening 33 seconds was in the end the decisive moment; Gregoire Defrel pouncing on his error to net an early winner.

“We were very unlucky on the goal, then made too many simple mistakes, took too many touches, never able to play out from the back the way we wanted to,” Gattuso told DAZN after the game.

“Nonetheless, it was a decent performance. When Samp were pressing us, we just gave it away too often, allowing them time to get into shape.

“We were coming off another defeat to Inter, we lost today to an unlucky incident, but the team tried everything to get back into it. There are still many rounds to go and we shouldn’t get downbeat.

“We tried to press them a bit higher, then moved to a three-man defence in an attempt to fill their penalty area with more men going forward.

“We tried three at the back in a friendly, but we’re playing every three days at the moment and there’s no time for the kind of tactical drills we need. The same goes for Paqueta behind the strikers.”
