Gattuso: “We were in the game, we did not get crushed”

AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso was quick to point out the positives despite a 2-0 loss to Juventus at San Siro.

The Bianconeri took an early lead through a Mario Mandzukic header, but Higuain was presented with the chance to level from the penalty spot.

However, he couldn’t beat Wojciech Szczesny from 12 yards, and after Cristiano Ronaldo had scored in the second-half to make it 2-0, the Argentine was sent off for a second booking in the space of seconds.

“We did what we had to do,” Gattuso told reporters.

“We faced a team that was clearly better than us. We are not going to look for alibis about the refereeing decisions. We played against a strong team that has been winning for many years.

“We were in the game. We did not get crushed. We played well at times. The two teams are at different levels and we have to accept this. I liked the performance.

“Penalty taker? The players choose who take the penalties. Higuain was unlucky.”

“I hope Higuain apologises for his attitude with the referee, you have to control yourself better with the experience you have.

“He feels a lot of weight on him, he missed the penalty against his former team, sometimes the emotion can get you wrong. to move as little as possible and concentrate on the field.”

Gattuso continued by discussing the opponent: “Juventus is not only the strongest team in Italy, is the most equipped in Europe with City and Barcelona.

“We have recovered some balls, we are not brilliant, Calhanoglu has played by gritting his teeth, in terms of quality he gives you something less for this reason.”
