CEO Ivan Gazidis has reflected on a ‘truly incredible’ achievement as AC Milan won the Serie A title for the first time in 11 years.
Milan went into the game against Sassuolo knowing that a draw would be enough for them to be crowned champions but in the end they ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from Giroud and a goal from Kessie,
Gazidis was interviewed by Milan TV after the victory, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
On the victory: “Truly incredible. After 3 special years in the world and also for this club to be still at the top is a great pride. These fans are special, they pushed us at every step and these guys on the pitch have character and strength, incredible desire, incredible.
“It is a great pride, not only what we did but how. This is a young team, in the future, next year, we believe we can improve. But for tonight we enjoy this moment.”
On unity: “It’s a team effort, not only inside the club, on the pitch and also off the pitch. The unity with the fans is special, and with this support, anything is possible. Our fans deserve this evening because they have lived through so many difficult years, now it is a moment of pride for all of us. Together we made it.”
On if and when the team started believing: “We believed in it from the beginning, because with this desire, this desire for this group, we have always known that we have something special. I can’t say exactly but there is a unity, a strength within this club… Through so many difficulties. Now we are proud of these guys, of this club and of these fans: we did it all together.”
Gazidis also spoke to Sky Italia and was asked about whether it is true that the current journey Milan are on started at Mapei Stadium back in 2019-20 when the management decided not to hire Ralf Rangnick but to give Pioli an extension after a 2-1 win against Sassuolo.
“Perhaps, the truth is that this Milan was born in many moments, with so many special people. Is it thanks to Ibra? I say yes. Is it a team effort? Yes. perhaps it is the most important thing: the fans. They pushed us forward during difficult times, I am proud and happy for them. After so many years this club needs this evening, this moment,” he said.
On Maldini: “It is a beautiful story, but Paolo is not just a symbol, he is a serious director who works hard for this club. I have always believed in Paolo, from the beginning; now he is very important for this club, not only for the past but also for the future.”
On how he feels at Milan: “I feel at home, I am a Milan fan. I feel something special, I cannot explain but it is a feeling of belonging, it makes me very happy.
“For me this victory means something more. Not only what we did, but how. This group is special, it has a desire, a spirit of unity and with these things everything is possible. This is my best victory.”
Gazidis also spoke to Rai: “Spirit, a united spirit, shared with everyone inside the club. Stefano did an incredible job, even Paolo and Massara, all the staff.”
