GdS: 9 shots on target but more chances created – stats showcase ‘a new Leao’

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao has been at the centre of attention since the start of the season and especially in the last few months, having not scored in the league since September. The stats are indeed quite telling, showcasing a different Leao.

After ending last season with 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions, the expectations were naturally high on the winger. This was fueled by the contract renewal, with the fans hoping that he could finally pay at peace, knowing that the Sporting situation had been solved.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below) analysed the stats of Leao compared to the Scudetto (2021-22 season). One thing stands out, which is that the winger only has 9 shots on target this season, compared to 21 at this point in the Scudetto season. He has also taken fewer shots in total (38 vs. 52).

On the other hand, Leao has created more chances this season (37 vs. 22) and he also has double the amount of assists (6). Another thing that Pioli has requested is the winger’s presence in the penalty box, evidenced by the increased touches in that area (120 vs. 99).

In short, Leao seemingly has a more unselfish approach these days, setting up his teammates rather than going for glory himself.
