GdS: Cardinale ‘demands a change’ from Fonseca after positive mercato – the situation

A report this morning has suggested that there is an element of pressure on the new coach Paulo Fonseca because Gerry Cardinale believes that the summer transfer window provided him with plenty of resources.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport talks about how Cardinale will be at the game against Venezia tomorrow night at San Siro and he expects to see a change in gear from Milan, who are yet to win a game in the league this season.

Cardinale ‘will be able to enjoy the spectacle of San Siro, once again close to sold out’ which is very good for the business side of things, but he also knows that the fans ‘need to applaud and not boo, as already happened in Parma’.

Cardinale ‘remains dissatisfied’ and Fonseca ‘is the first from whom he demands a change’. The RedBird Capital founder is convinced that the summer mercato that the management conducted was positive and has strengthened the team.

While the CEO Giorgio Furlani publicly backed Fonseca during the unveiling of Tammy Abraham just after the Lazio game, La Gazzetta’s report is certainly more in line with Sky’s which claimed that the Venezia, Liverpool and Inter games are an early watershed for the former Lille boss.

  1. Lmao positive…. 6.5 at best, we didn’t get Bennacer cover, we kept RLC and Tammy although budget-wise made sense, but after waiting for years for a ST and Zirkzee being our main target that was a big punch in the gut…

If we had gotten Zirkzee and another CM I would have given 8.5-9?! But it currently is sub-par

  2. Positive? Like 15m Royal Emerson and sent out Kalulu to upgrade our right side? Getting Pavlović and Fofana to strength the defence and then giving the shit show every match for conceding 2 goals per match? And the drama on whether to keep Jovic then trying kick him out on the last day?

  3. “The RedBird Capital founder is convinced that the summer mercato that the management conducted was positive and has strengthened the team.”
It remains to be seen how much this mercato strengthened the team.
Morata was pulling the same numbers or slightly less than what Giroud was pulling with us, although he was playing in more defensive teams. I do see a lot of positives in Morata, but I don’t know how much of an upgrade over Giroud he really is.
There was a lot of hype around Pavlovic whom we’ve gotten for a bargain, but he’s still leaving a bit to be desired.
We’ve renewed to Jovic only to then keep him out of the UEFA list. We’ve kept Saelemakers for a bit because the coach asked so, only to trade with with Abraham because we weren’t satisfied with Jovic whom we’ve just renewed to.
Spent most of july and august trying to get Fofana for a bargain only to pay the full price, so the guy came to us missing the whole preparation and out of shape, and he isn’t even the true DM we needed !!
Got a poor man’s Calabria for 15M€ who is a bigger burden on our spendings, took a foreigner’s place in a position already filled with players and we’ve somehow offloaded Kalulu who could play in 2 positions but kept Thiaw.
Brought Jimenez but for what purpose exactly ?
Vos might be useful for the future and we got him for a low price, I’ll give them that.
So again, we did a mercato which is unfocused and didn’t properly adress the weaknesses we have.
I’m just hoping that some of the players I’ve named will surprise me and turn out to be much better than expected.

    1. Excellent post with several true statements. I am a bit more optimistic about it. I do have more hopes for Fofana than most people here. He was not training properly with Monaco during the lengthy negotiations. He is off match form. Once fully fit and up to speed, maybe he will surprise us. I think Pavlovic was an excellent signing and I believe that Vos although probably not entirely ready yet, will turn into a good asset for us. Morata and Abraham (if the latter manages to remain healthy) could actually be a good alternating center forward duo.

But yes, not reinforcing the RB position – actually Emerson is worse than Calabria, I think – not having a deputy for Theo (who is also off-form) and the DM still being a shaky position despite hopes that maybe Fofana can evolve into the role, are very strong concerns.

For me, however, the biggest blunder is not the players we signed (although signing Emerson is a big blunder) but rather the mediocre head coach we got, when so many better names were available.

      1. Even if somehow Fonseca manages to turn things around, I still don’t understand what criterias made him a pick (let me guess, the same ones that almost made Lopetegui our new coach ?).
We should have tried to get Motta sooner, but among the names that were available after that (and who is still available I think), is Conceiçao.
The man has won la Liga Portugal several times and made us look very bad when played Porto. So while he has no experience in serie A, he is a winner than can make a team punch above its weight class.

        1. The club doesn’t want a strong personality like De Zerbi and Conte. Coceicao is a good coach, his Porto is a regular in knock out stage and drag Arsenal to extra time in CL. I don’t know about Lopetegui but at least he got hired by Spain and Real Madrid, even if he flop at the end.

      2. Getting Miranda as a free agent and keeping Kalulu made more sense financially and sporting wise than acquiring Emerson. The decisions were highly questionable.

  4. He called it a positive mercato lol… Other than Pavlovic, the rest are underwhelming including Fofana. Fonfana is simply Reijnders 2.0, exactly the same type of midfielder, and definitely not a DM by all means.

  5. Cardinale should do us a favor and fire himself along with Furlani, Ibra, Moncada and Fonseca.

You have to be a moron to think that you can run a club successfully with inexperienced people in management and no experience Sporting Director.

Inter’s best signing was Marotta. That’s the difference between Milan and Inter. The people in management at Inter are experience people who knows how to build a successful winning team. While at Milan we have a bunch of stooges who are inexperienced and clueless.
