GdS: Chaos at Ancona could see path opened for Milan’s U23 team

By Ben Dixon -

There has been concrete interest from AC Milan regarding entering an Under-23 team into the league, and today, a report has suggested that there could be an opening due to some chaos at one of the clubs currently in the league.

Milan have one of the best problems in football – their Primavera side is full of talent. Whilst this bodes well for the future, it also means that they must create pathways to the future for them, and this is where challenges arise.

Commonly, exciting youth prospects will have their game time shared between minutes in the youth team and rare opportunities with the senior squad. Alternatively, they are sent on loan to allow them to play senior football without being thrown into the deep end.

Both options are feasible, of course, and we have seen examples of this during the current season. However, there is an emerging third option – a U23 side in Serie C. Now, this system is the best of both worlds. Youngsters get senior minutes in a competitive league whilst remaining at the club, eligible for minutes with the senior side.

This explains why the Rossoneri have been interested in the prospect of joining Serie C, however, they have not had the chance to do so, at least until now.

As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, due to the financial issues at Ancona, where ‘an alarm is sounding’, there could be an opportunity to enter Serie C. The report suggests that a club could drop out of the league, which could open a place that Milan could take.

It is believed that next week could be when a decision arrives, but it is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
