GdS: Derby long forgotten as Milan and Pioli set sights on the second star

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan claimed three crucial points against Genoa on Saturday evening and thus made it seven wins out of a possible eight games in the league. A start that shouldn’t underestimated, as a report highlights.

In today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), Milan’s start to the season is discussed at length. The defeat against Inter in the derby now seems long forgotten, with the Rossoneri responding well despite a tough schedule.

In the win against Genoa, as the newspaper continues, Milan got a controversial goal in the 86th minute, had their goalkeeper sent off and then a striker made a decisive save in goal. This Milan side has something special, and the second star can be aimed for.

Gerry Cardinale saw the match at the airport, returning from a trip to the Middle East, and shared his thoughts: “The season is still at the beginning and the boys continue to consolidate as a team. However, I’m proud of the character and determination they showed last night on the pitch. This is what champions are ultimately made of.”

Cardinale also wrote to Pioli two nights ago, complimenting him on his four-year anniversary at the club and telling him he was happy to have him. Indeed, on October 9 2019, Milan announced his arrival and no one thought he could go on to achieve a Scudetto and a Champions League semi-final, let alone the UCL return.

Milan now have the right and duty to think about the second star. They have 21 points after eight games and in the three-points-per-win era, that has only happened once. Yes, you guessed it, Scudetto season when they had 22 points.
