GdS: ‘Fonseca changes again’ – questions asked of Tomori and Reijnders

AC Milan have been on a pendulum this season, and have too often swung between good and bad moments. It would be fair to suggest that there have been more negatives than positives, and for this reason, the Rossoneri need more from their key players.

Aside from the derby victory, Milan’s season has been very poor. Two losses from two in the Champions League paints an already questionable picture, but underwhelming performances in Serie A further add fuel to the fire.

Because of this, Paulo Fonseca is once again facing questions about his future, and he is left trying to find answers during the international break, and a report suggests that he may look to radical answers.

As Gazzetta dello Sport writes this morning, the Rossoneri face themselves, and they must overcome the challenges facing them. If they don’t action could be taken, and for this reason, the Portuguese head coach may look away from the starters – something which he has rarely done.

For this reason, Fikayo Tomori could start from the bench, after several poor performances, headlined by the events in Florence. With Strahinja Pavlovic and Malick Thiaw both contesting the place, there is a chance the Portuguese coach will look to another option.

The other bold call is the one regarding Tijjani Reijnders. With Youssouf Fofana’s shielding of the defence, the Dutchman has more license to attack, but he has not proven himself so far, leading Fonseca to question his role. It is, therefore, possible that Ruben Loftus-Cheek returns to the starting squad in his place against Udinese.

Tammy Abraham could also be given a game on the sidelines after his performance in the Diavolo’s last game, and Noah Okafor could be allowed some rare starting minutes.

    1. He did so brilliantly against Germany the coach was sooooo mesmerized and saved him for the next game by subbing him at half time. He didn’t want hi. To use up his brilliance in that one game. Was hoping to see the many many articles on how well he did…but to no avail ☹️
PS: use of sarcasm was heavily employed

  1. Reijnders needs to impose himself into games more, for sure.

I wonder though, with Morata dropping deep to create passing lanes then moving upfield kind of negates what Reijnders does. If both him and Morata drive forward then it creates a lack of balance in the middle with only Fofana left to clean up.

I wonder if Fonseca instructions have anything to do with it.

    1. Last game it was pulisic who dropped into the midfield to assist reijnders which was even worse as there was then no threat on that side of the field…playing with a back 3 (based on fofana being deep in the build up) you need 2 guys who can turn with it in the midfield…they squeezed the field so tight with their lines last game and rarely were there more than 1 guy to drop in to get the ball…morata is good on the ball but when you are in the middle of the field you need players who have been scanning their entire lives like all good cm…who are comfortable checking both shoulders while the ball is on the way to them. Leaving reijnders to do the job of 2 guys and giving away the middle of the field.
