GdS: ‘Let’s play the derby’ – Inter start ahead of Milan in battle for the second star

By Oliver Fisher -

Both AC Milan and Inter will begin the new season hoping to win the Scudetto and thus the right to put a second star above their crest.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) takes a look at the business done by the two sides so far, starting with Stefano Pioli who ‘changed canvas and designed a new Milan’ while Simone Inzaghi ‘touched up Inter with a few brushstrokes’.

Milan have chosen to add more size and physicality to their side, a choice perhaps partly dictated by the domination in the Champions League semi-final. In midfield, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah arrived to try and create a pressing machine.

There is no longer just the left side to rely on either as Samuel Chukwueze should be Rafael Leao’s twin on the right flank, while Noah Okafor and Christian Pulisic are versatile profiles.

Inter meanwhile have signed Davide Frattesi for the midfield having lost Marcelo Brozovic, while Lazar Samardzic should provide more creativity in the midfield trio and Juan Cuadrado could offer something different to Denzel Dumfries.

The widening of options makes Inter’s midfield the strongest in the league. The derby on 16 September will make us understand who has gained the most from the changes and how wide the gap is between the clubs.

Both clubs are in the front row of candidates for the Scudetto, with Juve and Napoli. For two years, despite injuries and legal misfortunes, the Bianconeri have had the strongest squad in the tournament, together with Inter, but they have not found a game that allows them to unleash that power onto the pitch.

This summer it seems that Allegri has come to terms with modernity (pressing, low construction), while Napoli are a mandatory candidate, even if it is difficult to stay at that level and the change of coach will require new ideas.

The Rossoneri management impressed with the speed and number of signings, but today it is impossible to predict how many will turn out to be worthy of Milan and if they will be able to compensate for what Sandro Tonali leaves behind.

What must also be determined is how much Paolo Maldini’s absence at Milanello will weigh, given his charismatic experience in supporting the team.

      1. Thuram?
        – Sure. They beat us to it.

        Frattesi?
        – Milan didn’t even start the negotiations when the deal was struck. Why? Wasn’t in our plans obviously.

        Samardzic?
        – Never made an offer. So… Wasn’t in our plans.

        Who else?

    1. Balogun 40m euro . Where they get that money ? Forcing arsenal accept payment on 5 years installment ? Or loan with option to buy ? Why would arsenal want to accept that if their financial are good and balogun still on long term contract? Even if they success convince arsenal , how they convince balogun and say balogun would be marcus deputy ?

  1. Agreed, on paper (sadly) Inter is still ahead of us, but the gap is fast closing; fanbase needs to remember where the gap was in 2019.
ACM reconstructed the team; hopefully towards the best and I am very much looking forward to watching some high-pressing, offensive and attractive football pretty much like the Scudetto year!
Most likely it will require some time for so many new players to adapt and work collectively -and this is exactly why I am a bit sceptical tbh- therefore I hope the management and fans are patient and trust Pioli’s work. It is positive that we were fast on closing deals ahead of starting the pre-season.
It is also very good to see serieA raising the bar across many teams.
    Forza Milan!

  2. Speed, physical play and more balance winger, those something we didnt have in the last season … Just cant wait to face the snake

  3. It’s only four new players that will be new signings in our starting eleven, i wonder why people here think we’ll chabge the whole first eleven…

Maignan, theo, Calabria, tomori, thiaw, leao and giroud will all start

  4. Ok I’ve been out for a couple weeks touching grass. What did I miss?? 😂😂😂😂
We’re still behind Inter after all of this transfer activity and they’ve lost Broz? Lol. Or is it that they’ve not changed much but made additions 🤔

    1. They have lost Dzeko, Skriniar, Brozovic, Onana and Lukaku. And TBF none of the replacements are really at the same quality of the ones that left the club

      1. Dzeko and Lukaku are going to be big losses. Dzeko moreso. Skirinar didn’t play much but Broz is a massive loss for them. They did get Fratessi though but he’s not the same level. Onana too is a big loss but I think Sommer is decent. Def not Onana footwork level but reflexes are great.
I think Juve’s young team is underrated. They’re gonna do well this season

  5. Same can be said about Inter as they have lost one of the best CBs in the league in Skriniar, as well Brozovic, Dzeko, and Onana, all of them part of the starting 11. And don’t forget Logkaku too…
And their mercato and/or replacement players are not stellar: Frattesi, Samardzic, Sommer, Thuram, Cuadrado, Bisseck…. give me a break, none of them can give them a leap of quality. Let’s see how the future fares, Milan have bought interesting players to compete so let’s see
