GdS: Leao gets to work with Fonseca – why a crucial season awaits

By Oliver Fisher -

While the eyes of AC Milan fans are on the mercato and potential additions, Paulo Fonseca is has also welcomed the ‘addition’ of Rafael Leao to his squad out in the USA, and a crucial season awaits.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, Milan’s one summer signing so far is Alvaro Morata and he will take up Olivier Giroud’s legacy, while Strahinja Pavlovic should be the next to arrive from Red Bull Salzburg to replace Simon Kjaer in the squad, at least numerically.

There has been a lot of talk about Emerson Royal who seems close, Youssouf Fofana whose situation has descended into a saga, and Lazar Samardzic who feels like a ‘cherry on the cake’ signing at the moment, but Fonseca’s mission is to raise the levels of existing assets too.

There is a big question mark about Leao: will he show up as the formidable, breathtaking winger who enchanted in the Scudetto season and on other big nights, or will he be the more ineffective and at times disinterested player who makes coaches and fans wonder what could be?

For many, Leao is the ‘purchase’ on which the entire season depends because we are talking about the player considered potentially among the strongest in the league, and he is the highest earner in the Milan squad at €7m net per season.

He was given the No.10 shirt and even wore the armband last season, but now it is time for the Portuguese to really demonstrate that he is worth all this trust and give weight to the value of the investment.

At 25 years old, the excuse of youth begins to wear thin and when you are blessed with strength, quality, power, acceleration and imagination you can and must lead your team to great things. Fonseca knows this, and will begin working with him.

  1. All success is not straight forward line up, but it goes with ups and downs. We can’t expect to have good results with players who are on 4million net of wages.
Best players must have 7+ million. Also owner must do next steps to gain 100 million of euros revenue extra without reaching semifinals of champions league.

    1. Money spent = success .
Last season Bvb was in the CL finale. Their payroll is same lvl as ours. A season before that Inter. They pay a bit more than we but not that much, their highest paid player is Barella with 6M-500k bonus net, ours is Rafa with 5M+2M in bonus net.

If you know how to 10x revenue over night we are all ears brah

      1. They have more depth and kept adding to their team when pieces left. We can’t say the same. Their core has remained for years…us not quite so

        1. sure, and all they have to show for that is 1 title in the last years. So do we. Concluison, spending more mone is not really a solution. We do need to pay players their worth (theo, mike) but that wont give us titles by default. I think they plan to do that anyway hence the ‘they not leaving’ comments from Ibra

      If only it was THAT simple… 😀 😀 😀

  2. If he lives up to his full potential he won’t be playing at Milan. He’d be at Real/ManCity/PSG. So careful what you wish for.

  3. well we don’t. have the luxury for him not to reach his potential anymore. it is time we start putting our players on that Ballon list. at list top 20 then gradually we go down the list top 10 and top 3.

So this is leao season to tell us he can make the list. if not Saudi next coming summer
