GdS: Milan could be the surprise of the season – hinges on one thing

By Isak Möller -

Following the successful ending to last season, Milan are hoping to build on the positive spell and compete for a Champions League spot this term. Based on the squad and the recent signings, it’s certainly within reach.

Ahead of the league opener, which will take place this evening (Fiorentina-Torino), Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews.it) decided to focus on the big contenders in today’s edition. Milan, as they write, depend less on Zlatan Ibrahimovic than what you think.

Thanks to the excellent work of Stefano Pioli, the players know that they have the strength to go beyond the value of individual performances. Even if the latter aspect is also decisive, the Rossoneri are finally playing like a unit.

However, they still need to reinforce their defence. Matteo Gabbia and Leo Duarte aren’t good enough to start on a regular basis, although the former is promising, but if a new centre-back arrives Milan could really be the surprise of the season.
