GdS: Why Milan’s defensive record is considerably worse than Juventus and Inter’s

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan have made a considerably worse start to the season than Inter and Juventus from a defensive standpoint and there are clear reasons why.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com), a perfect storm had led to Milan conceding many more goals in the league than their main rivals.

Inter have conceded just five goals so far in the first 10 games, thanks largely to the form of Yann Sommer who has seven clean sheets.

For Juventus, just six goals have been conceded. A number of good defenders like Bremer, Danilo and Federico Gatti have been in form.

At Milan, 11 goals have been conceded, largely due to the defensive injuries that have led to a lack of stability as well as the lack of defensive work from the wingers in Stefano Pioli’s 4-3-3 system.

Also, Milan should have signed a proven defender in the summer to counter the decline of Simon Kjaer.

  1. I don’t think Bremer, Danilo and Federico Gatti are necessarily better than our defenders, I just think the system they play and the coaching styles makes them efficient at defending. Same goes for Inter. Their coach is good at individual game tactics while we rely on a system of play that hasn’t been the same or as effective since after the Scudetto. It will bring us results in some sense and keep us near the top but we need something more.

The sooner as realize we’re in the second band, the better for us. There’s Juve and Inter on Scudetto defence form (and I’ll throw Atalanta in there too) and I think it’s those two for the Scudetto as per preseason predictions. Then the second band is us, Fiorentina, Napoli, Lazio and the like. There’s already a distinction in teams just looking by the goal diff and goal conceeded. I said at the beginning that I don’t mind giving up goals as long as we’re scoring alot…but even now the goals have dried up and thus giving up goals becomes a problem. I saw Juve and Inter in their last games grind out and fight for victory while we ran out of steam

  2. Milan signing Pellegrino was a complete waste of money. They should have signed Koulierakis or Todibo and Pavlidis as a striker instead of Jovic. Smh

  3. In terms of grinding we do grind as well to win games but sometimes the players just chose to be lazy at their own end and poili not helping matters he is very soft and sometimes it takes action and solidity to make the players sit up

  4. No way! I’ve been told by commenters on here that Pioli is this master tactician and his system is so complex. There is only one legend, the Great Krunic, the best defensive midfielder in the world, who has perfected it. I don’t believe it….

  5. Pavard and Bastoni are world class centrebacks, acerbi has become a reliable veteran, their wingbacks are also great. Gatti and bremer are good and will improve, our only world class man in defense is the but our other defenders have regressed since scudetto

  6. We only have Tomori. And he doesn’t have a strong partner that’s it, Tomori does way more in Milan defence more than any of u here will admit to.
Tomori I the heart of Milan defence.

  7. Well, I been fans of Milan from George Weah played. And when I see Milan right now, and see under Pioli, I always not convinced with their style of play.

For me, its better see Milan under Gattuso. Because they played with very strong motivation at least.

Under Pioli, I don’t know, because he can not give a certainty of tactics, and the formation is always the same. That’s why our players are very2 vulnerable to injury.

Its because Pioli can not give more trust to the subs or young players.

I think, with all the respect, better Pioli manage Milan until this season end, and for the next season better management find new coach.
