GdS: Milan’s emergency worsens with Calabria out vs. Monza – Pioli’s plan

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan only returned from Newcastle yesterday, but today they will begin preparing for another crucial game against Monza at San Siro on Sunday.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), it was deemed too complicated to leave on Wednesday evening after the game so Stefano Pioli preferred to stay an extra night in England and give the players a day off.

Some, especially those who played less at Newcastle, still stopped by Milanello for a bit of extra work, but today there will be a full training session in the afternoon. The sqyad will begin preparing for Milan-Monza, scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 CET.

Monza have just beaten Genoa, while the Rossoneri must build on their win in Newcastle and erase the defeat against Atalanta. For Pioli there is no middle ground, and instead the requirement to win.

In defence there is an even bigger emergency. Fikayo Tomori, Theo Hernandez and Alessandro Florenzi are available, while captain Davide Calabria is suspended after the red card he got in Bergamo.

One of Jan-Carlo Simic or Davide Bartesaghi should therefore start, with Simic the favourite because it would allow Theo Hernandez tp return to his preferred left-back position.

Further forward, Bennacer is battling for a spot in the line-up it would be his first as a starter after his return. Noah Okafor, Luka Jovic and Samuel Chukwueze did so well at Newcastle that they are candidates for a start too. More indications should arrive today.

    1. And why would they leave their current team for us? Especially Emery. Villa is flying high at Premier League, they give him the player he want – Pau Torres for 33m.

We won’t even part with that money for striker – not to mention Defender.

    2. Then you’re a traitor who sings praises about other team’s coaches.

Why don’t you just cut out the middle man and go support Brighton or Villa?

      Seriously.

The easiest thing in the world for you to do is go support one of those teams and then you’ll get what you want.

What’s keeping you as a Milan supporter?

Do you like the name or something?

  1. Maignan – Florenzi – Tomori – Simic – Theo – Bennacer – Adli – Chuk – Jovic – Okafor – Leao.

    Hybrid 4-2-3-1/4-2-4

I just really want to see that front again. 🙂

      1. It looked pretty good at the end of the Newcastle match and since that is all we have to go on I don’t think you have enough evidence to say we would get destroyed.

    1. Sure. Ditch your two leading goal scorers because some guys had a decent showing against a team that was obviously tired and left themselves completely exposed chasing a goal. Makes sense.

      1. You’re making it sound like our tactics this season have been consistently working well in the first place. The 4-2-3-1 with RLC worked ONE TIME. The 4-3-3 has been inconsistent. Why not try something new? If it doesn’t work out, fine.

        1. RLC has been weird, one game he adds so much and in other games like with newcastle he doesn´t even track back, let’s try 4-4-2 we can leave the attacking to our wingers who are good and we have many of

  2. Knowing Pioli, he will elect to play Bartesaghi at LB, Theo at CB next to Tomori, and Florenzi at RB. Simic will continue to twiddle his thumbs on the bench. Also, wasn’t Kjaer close to returning against Newcastle? Did he suffer a relapse or something? He’s been utterly useless this season what with his “muscle fatigue”.
