GdS: Milan escaped a penalty vs. Bologna as VAR failed to intervene again

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan clinched a comfortable win in their game against Bologna last night, finding the back of the net two times and keeping a clean sheet. However, it perhaps should have been a bit more dramatic.

The Rossoneri’s domination throughout the game was there for everyone to see. After scoring the second goal, Stefano Pioli decided to bring on the likes of Tommaso Pobega, Yacine Adli and Alexis Saelemaekers, feeling safe with the lead.

However, Bologna made a slight push for a comeback as Nicola Sansone came on with a lot of energy. He didn’t just hit the post with a long-range effort, but he also perhaps should have been awarded a penalty.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via SempreMilan), around the 75th-minute mark, Sansone was brought down in the box after a rash challenge by Fikayo Tomori. The Bologna man had just passed the ball on and thus wasn’t in control anymore, but the referee still made the wrong decision.

It’s a grey area whether VAR should have intervened or not, seeing as the referee saw the challenge and deemed it to be fair enough, but the replays clearly showed Milan got lucky. The VAR discussions continue, therefore.

  1. The Bologna man had just passed the ball on and thus wasn’t in control anymore , referee didn’t made the wrong decision because player already pass the ball it would be unfair to give penalty on that ,

  2. I guess the reason is that Sansone was judged to run into Tomori, the same reason Calabria should not have been awarded a penalty against Udinese…

  3. From another angle you can see that the contact was after Sansone had started to fall.
Not the same as Calabria against Udinese

  4. If look closely you will see that anyone into tomori after he passed the ball, tomori was able to himself by not realising a force kick on Sansone….. You don’t need to be told. That’s it wasn’t a penalty. Calebra’s own is very clear, he kicked him while calebra already touched the ball… Success wasn’t didn’t plated with caution on that part.
