GdS: Milan’s numbers without Maignan in goal as Sportiello gears up

By Isak Möller -

Mike Maignan picked up a minor muscle discomfort in the game against Newcastle and will not be available against Verona tomorrow. Marco Sportiello is thus ready to step in, new for the season.

Milan parted ways with Ciprian Tatarusanu at the end of last season and replaced him with Sportiello, who arrived on a free transfer from Atalanta. Now, the 31-year-old will have to step up as Maignan will miss the next 1-2 games.

As highlighted by Gazzetta Dello Sport, Maignan hasn’t had a single season with Milan without injuries. This also means there is a good amount of data on how the Rossoneri perform without him.

In the 2021-22 season, Milan had an average of 2.05 points per game with the Frenchman (39 games), while it was 1.88 with Tayarusanu (9 games). Maignan averaged a goal conceded every 107 minutes, while it was 67 minutes for Tatarusanu.

In the 2022-23 season, Milan had an average of 1.69 points per game with the Frenchman (29 games) and it was exactly the same with Tayarusanu (23 games), most likely because of the poor period in January/February.

Maignan averaged a goal conceded every 100 minutes, while it was 70 minutes for Tatarusanu in that season. It remains to be seen how well the Rossoneri will do with Sportiello between the sticks.
