GdS: Milan’s plans for Tonali and the excellent midfield depth available to Pioli in 2020-21

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan could enter the 2020-21 campaign with a ridiculous amount of depth in the defensive midfield position, a report claims.

We took a look at how Milan could line up next season if some of the rumoured new signings do get confirmed, while La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive) focus specifically on the engine room and the potential role of Sandro Tonali.

The Brescia player is a rather complete midfielder, who knows how to play both as a regista and as a mezzala, possessing good feet but also tenacity when not in possession.

Initially, the 20-year-old could be Ismael Bennacer’s deputy in Pioli’s 4-2-3-1 as he would rotate with the Algerian given Milan could easily play over 50 games in 2020-21.

It cannot be ruled out though that Milan may focus on a midfield of only talent and youth, placing Tonali alongside Bennacer and therefore in place of Franck Kessie.

Pioli could also adopt new tactical solutions if necessary such as a 4-3-3, allowing Kessie and Bennacer to play as mezzalas. Meanwhile, it should be considered that Tiemoue Bakayoko is close to rejoining and Tommaso Pobega looks set to stick around.
