GdS: No.10 shirt and monthly bonuses – details of Leao’s Milan renewal

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao is expected to sign his contract renewal with AC Milan today and the announcement should thus arrive in the afternoon. Further details have now emerged about the new contract, as a report highlights.

The negotiations have been long and intense, but Milan reached an agreement with Leao’s entourage already a few weeks ago. All the details have now been sorted and Gazzetta Dello Sport, through Luca Bianchin, has revealed some new details.

Leao will earn €5m per year as a base but the bonus structure will be slightly different. The bonuses, in fact, will not come into play at the end of the season but instead month by month, with a series of progressive bonuses included in the deal.

This means that Leao likely will earn just over €7m in total for the 2023/24 season, as the report states, while the salary will then stabilise at €6.5m for the following seasons. As has been widely reported, there will also be a €175m clause.

Finally, Leao is thinking about switching to the No.10 shirt. Brahim Diaz is set to leave the club and would free up that number, but in case he doesn’t leave then the winger could also try for the No.7 shirt (currently Yacine Adli).

  1. Giving the most prestigious number #10 to a loanee is simply a disgrace in the first place.

I don’t know if any other club did that tbh.

(Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for Diaz’s contribution, but does a loanee deserve the most coveted jersey in a team like Milan?)

Would be glad if Leao wear it next season.

  2. Just give him any number he wants and get him signed up – (apart from the number 1 and the two retired numbers obviously).

  3. #10 is meant for the best player or one of the best players of any given team,be it National or at Club level; invariably R Leao is AC Milan best player at the moment,so he deserves it and should have it regardless of Brahim Diaz situation.

  4. I don’t know about no 10.
I feel player like leao suit no 7 more (?)
    Like sheva, pato.
And tbh i thought he would want no 7 since he’s from portugal, and maybe he wanted to be like cr7, idk it’s not that important as long as he perform at the highest level.

Regarding the renewal, i hope it’s a sign that milan able to convince leao that they’ll do better in transfer market to be able to compete better next season

  5. If we only could find a RW that is at least 75% of what Leao is. Imagine being able to threaten on both flanks – all the teams we have played this season have known that Milans RW is easy to defend, so they focused more on Leao (which got obvious at the end of the season), they but two guys on him to crowd him out.
