GdS: ‘The path is right’ – Ibrahimovic calls and Pioli answers

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan earned a vital victory against Empoli on Sunday, even if it was not their best performance of the season. However, results like Sunday’s will be appreciated by the club’s executives and could play a part in Stefano Pioli’s future.

Since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return to Milan, the rumour mill regarding managers has continued to spin, and there have been several reports suggesting that the Swede will be heavily involved with the decision regarding a manager at the end of the season, whether that be continuation under Pioli, or moving to a new coach.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) states, on Friday, Zlatan offered some thoughts on Pioli’s situation, stating that the club are happy with him and that he is doing a good job, and Sunday’s result is another showing of Pioli doing a good job, by no means was the game pretty, but the outcome was.

After the game, Pioli replied to Ibrahimovic’s comments, stating that he wanted to ‘stay at Milan for as long as possible‘. However, all parties know the situation.

There are no guarantees for next season regarding the head coach position, especially given the Diavolo’s European performances are set to influence the decision – nothing will be confirmed until the season’s conclusion.

However, as the report states, the road with Pioli is right. Aside from Inter, no team has performed better than the Rossoneri in 2024. Against Empoli, his side proved that they can grind out results, and they kept another clean sheet in Serie A, which can only be appreciated.

    1. A win is a win. We often found difficulties in finding the goal against lower half opposition, so it should be appreciated.

And it’s true in 2024, the only serie A team with better result than us is Inter.

At least with Pioli we are guaranteed top four place, with 3 out of 4 last season, top two.

Just look at how we fare before Pioli come.. Since the last time Allegri was coaching us. Don’t take good results for granted.

I’m not against new coach, but credit should be given where it’s due.

      1. I agree that Pioli has been a great servant to the club, and 3 points is 3 points, but every time we string 2-3 wins together we get articles about how he will stay because of our “great form”.
        Then we go winless again.
The cycle is over and at the end of the season we should part ways with Pioli as amicably as possible for the man who restored Milan to top 4.

    2. Whether we beat a team or not, it shouldn’t matter … We also beat PSG and Newcastle.

What matters is what are the final results at the end of the year, whether the club has progressed or regressed compared to last year, do we believe that Pioli can make the team perform when it matters? In a few months, we’ll know the answer.

Is it Pioli’s fault that Milan spent roughly 40 million + 10 million bonuses to get Musah and Chukwueze when even Messias + Krunic would have done a better job.

      1. “Is it Pioli’s fault that Milan spent roughly 40 million + 10 million bonuses to get Musah and Chukwueze when even Messias + Krunic would have done a better job.”

Partly it is. He had more power over the transfers this summer and he could have said “no thanks” or “Keep Krunic” (as the mofo did which cost us 5-7M€ because he changed his mind afterwards and didn’t get a replacement either!).

  1. Pioli should stay if Conte is the only option for next season. Infacf, Conte should try out napoli, then Milan fans would see that Conte’s cycle in coaching is finished

  2. Yeah. But if we can get Motta, I’ll prefer we go for him next season. My prediction is that we will struggle with him initially, but he will do better with this same squad.

I watched the 2nd half of Inter vs Bologna on Saturday. Inter were totally outplayed. Just that the equalising goal didn’t come.

As for Pioli, he is doing his best, and he and the team are in sync (which is very important). He knows how to get the results. But I think he has reached his climax with this team. The time is ripes to path ways with a friendly handshake.

  3. Compared to last year, I believe we did progress especially at Serie A. It’s just that Inter are really crazy consistent this season, it’s hard to compete with them.

“Is it Pioli’s fault that Milan spent roughly 40 million + 10 million bonuses to get Musah and Chukwueze when even Messias + Krunic would have done a better job.”

And if we keep Messias there are more people that will complain. It’s easy to say in hindsight but who can predict, at the time of transfer, that Chukwu will be so bad in his maiden season here? Most of us are so excited about him – how he destroy La Liga last season… And Krunic was tried for some months but he failed miserably this season.
