GdS: Pioli wants complete revolution at Milan after squad depth issues

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli was forced to field the same starting eleven in many consecutive games last season due to the lack of depth in the squad. As a result, the backups from this past season are all expected to leave.

AC Milan have entered a new era with the sacking of Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara, giving more faith to Pioli and Chief Scout Geoffrey Moncada. And this summer, they want to get the signings right to ensure proper squad depth.

The depth was Milan’s main issue last season and as reported by today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (see photo below), Milan could say goodbye to as many as 13 players this summer.

Starting at the back, Ciprian Tataursanu and Antonio Mirante are both out of contract at the end of the month and are set to leave. Marco Sportiello has been brought in as the new second-choice goalkeeper, while a youngster could take the third spot.

It won’t be Devis Vasquez, though, who was signed in January but now will leave to free up a non-EU spot. Sergino Dest, who was an emergency signing on loan, will not be redeemed by the Rossoneri. Fode Ballo-Toure is also up for sale and he could return to France, while Mattia Caldara’s contract likely will be terminated.

In the midfield, Aster Vranckx will return to Wolfsburg after not impressing enough and Tiemoue Bakayoko has been let go too. Yacine Adli could also leave. He will either leave on loan or permanently, but for the latter to happen an offer of €10m would have to arrive.

Charles De Ketelaere is also on the list of departures but Milan need an offer of €28m to avoid a capital loss, hoping that a club from the Premier League will step forward. Brahim Diaz, of course, has already officially left the club.

Up front, Ante Rebic and Divock Origi are expected to leave and could both move to Turkey, where they have suitors.

    1. Even juergen klopp make origi last choice for CF. Maybe you can utilise origi, cdk, rebic, ballo toure, sergino dest, bakayoko, florenzi, junior messias, tatarusanu, saladmaker more better as coach ? Dont worry it is easy to coach mediocre player, it is as easy write comment

      1. The problem is he wants this revolution but with what money? Those names except for CDK cost basically nothing. Which is why they were signed. Maldini did more with what he was given than Pioli realizes. The Coach is about to get a very rude awakening.

        1. Hopefully they also make him use some from the academy, maldini, Traore an Colombo deserve a regular spot from the bench.

      2. No, they will bring in Salah, Vinicius and Haaland for 50M budget.Of course we have Messias, Origi, Ballou Toure, Dest, Bakayoko, Tatarusanu. They all cost 15M together. If they had 150M they would sign better players. It should not be possible to be that stupid.

    1. It is easy to guess. For capital gains or players flip. Big clubs have this strategy to sign prospective players for less money and no giving them chance they sell the players later. What was the case of kerkez???

      1. Kerkez wanted to play regularly and Pioli can’t guarantee that. Big question actually because he didn’t seem to satisfied with Ballo toure, but maybe Kerkez himself wanted to be reguler and not a backup, which we know, impossible as long as Theo stay.

  1. Ya sure pretty easy – cause with a total budget of 35M I’m sure we can replace all of these players cause you know we should collect over 100M in player sales LOLOLOLOLOLO

  2. Milan transfer policy is soooo dumb, selling quality players for 3 mil wont make any space in the transfer budget. They are actually decreaing the dept.

Rebic adli and vrankx are quality back up options. Pioli still starting krunic was beyond stupid.

Idk how milna thinks they gonna replace 13 players with 30 mil. Let alone quality. This is stupid.

  3. No team on the planet can rest 8-9 first team players in one go.

Even when Man City did that in the league cup they lost 2:0 to Southampton.

For squads to be competitive they need to have a core of 16-17 who play regularly including subs that cover multiple positions: 1 CB covering both CBs, 1 FB covering both FBs, 1 MF covering all MFs, and then some attacking options.

Man City had a squad of 24, Milan had a squad of 30.

Ironically Milan picked up more points when they had injuries pre-Christmas than when Pioli had the full, massive squad available to him in the run in.

He doesn’t know how to utilise a squad and make sensible rotations. That is the issue.
