GdS: From pressing to possession – the major faults under Fonseca so far

After failing to win either of their first two games of the Serie A season, questions are rife about AC Milan, and they must be answered quickly.

Starting a season with a point from two games is a horrendous start for a club who are expected to at least be in the title picture, and whilst it is not impossible for Milan to be in the fight at the end of the season, they have made it difficult for themselves already.

Drawing the first game was not too bad, given a few of the Rossoneri’s rivals for the Scudetto also drew. However, losing the second game creates a distance that will take time to claw back. Just a glance at the Serie A table shows that there is already a 12-place gap to overturn.

Of course, this is possible, and we cannot get carried away. Had the Rossoneri won their opening two fixtures the message would be the same – the season is long, and there is a lot of time left.

With this in mind, time must be used correctly, and there are several things to rectify.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News) writes, there are numerous faults in the Diavolo at the moment. Starting with the defence – four goals conceded in 180 minutes of football is horrible, and it must be rectified quickly. Especially when you consider that the defence was an area of weakness last season.

The report continues, stating that every one of Paulo Fonseca’s principles, seemingly, do not work, at least not yet. With the Rossoneri’s pressing, there are issues. With the Rossoneri’s intensity, there are issues. With the Rossoneri’s possession, there are issues. Finally, some of the key players look irrelevant.

Fonseca was the coach hand-picked by the management, but maybe their pick was not the right one. At least, it could seem like that at the moment.

  1. Leao doesn’t want to pressure,
    Theo doesn’t want to pressure,
    Okafor/Jovic doesn’t want to pressure,
    Cheek doesn’t want to pressure,

Musah too dumb to pressure succesfuly,
Calabria too dumb to pressure succesfuly,

Tomori forgot how to pressure (he was good before at it)

    Pavlović good pressure,
    Rejnders good pressure,
    Pulisic good pressure.

So you have 3 / 10 players who can fulfill what you want from them – failure is inevitable.

    1. Let’s remember that we bought players that are good ball carriers, not players with creativity, so what kind of possession football do they want to play?
